| | 3 Leg Torso Astor In Paris CD (2003)
Cartas Amarillas songs
$13.29 However, it's Mackay that has opened up the most amusing new vistas, his loony tune-esque xylophone running wild through cartoon soundscapes with exuberant abandon. The majority of the pieces, though, focus on Bela Balogh's emotive violin and Courtney Von Drehel's equally evocative accordion, which provide the heart and soul of the band's sound. All told it makes for a sumptuous album of many moods, each one unique and utterly enjoyable. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
3 Leg Torso began in 1996 when violinist Béla Balogh, cellist Gabe Leavitt and accordionist Courtney Von Drehle came together with the humble goals of creating a passionate and new sound for their instrumental trio and having fun. Fun was had early on with a number of street performances, that the trio termed "Meestering". Their original repertoire evolved into a combination of Modern Chamber music, Tango, Middle Eastern and Eastern European folk musics, that, coupled with a cinematic sense of musical storytelling, bridged the worlds of serious art and popular culture. The trio has been profiled on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" and on Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Artbeat." During the summer of 1997, 3 Leg Torso played a successful East Coast Tour, with stops and the Knitting Factory and CBGB's Gallery. Their first CD, "3 Leg Torso" was released in April 1998. One of the compositions from the CD, Divertissments for Performing Bears, was used as theme music for a Bosnian television series and other pieces have been used in various American and European television commercials. Commissions they have received include scoring With Hope and Help, a United Nations funded documentary on AIDS in Thailand; scoring The Dowager's Feast and The Dowager's Idyll, two films by academy award winning animator Joan Gratz; and composing a series of new pieces for the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art's 1998-1999 season. 3 Leg Torso is now a quintet after adding percussionist/mallet player Gary Irvine, accoustic bass player Michael Papillo and mallet player/percussionist (vibes, marimba, xylophone) Kyle Maclowery. The ensemble's increased size is reflected in the larger scope of their eclectic repertoire. They have performed a number of popular shows in Portland, Seattle, Eugene,New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, ...

| | Normoton Gold CD (2007)
Cartas Amarillas songs
$9.45 Drawing from the Normoton label's back catalog for its 25th overall release, Normoton Gold is an enjoyable enough showcase of the somewhat schizophrenic (but proud to be so) German company. That said, the overall focus of Normoton tends toward the electronic, so it's little surprise that Strassman's "Puzzlen" starts things off with its semi-microhouse kick, the crackling of extra percussion and the abbreviated basslines making for a song that's almost all tension and no release but still gets away with it. Other standouts in that vein include Andreas Heiszenberger's "Love Hits" and the Barebackshow's done-for-the-comp contribution, "Beatbeatz," with its brisk, compressed crunch sounding like a perfect fusion of dance styles from at least three different decades all in one place. (The other wholly new track, Traffic Jam's "Metronome," is well named thanks to its direct industrial/house punch, but the moody vocals add a further melancholic tinge.) Some songs are enjoyable for the sheer novelty more than anything else -- Electroserge's "Electrocaterpillar" is such a pitch-perfect re-creation of, indeed, electro that about the only thing missing is a video featuring the cast of Body Rock. Meanwhile, the swirling melodies of "Gender Bender" by MCL sound like something Cirque du Soleil might use as a backing track for a midair ballet or something similar -- not a criticism, merely an observation -- while Landesvatter's "S+F" sounds like a track from the Harold Budd/Cocteau Twins collaboration album given a low-key remix, no bad thing at all. Also, any label that signs an act called Smutny has to have its heart in the right place. ~ Ned Raggett
Normoton celebrates the 25th release with its first label compilation. Since there has never been any dogmatic style policy connected to the German label, the musical diversity is just amazing. Label owner Klaus Burkard consequently releases quality music by believing in his instinct ...
