In the late 1980s, Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians caught the nation's fancy with their neo-hippie folk-rock. Since parting with the band, Brickell's solo outings have been few and far between--one in the mid-'90s (produced by husband Paul Simon) and then nothing until this 2003 release. VOLCANO bears little relation to the New Bohemians days; some cuts offer moody, atmospheric balladeering a la latter-day Rickie Lee Jones, while others such as "Oo La La" seem at least partly informed by Simon's world-pop syncretism. There are other interesting stylistic detours--the jazzy "I'd Be Surprised," the Sheryl Crow-meets-Counting Crows soulful pop of "Not Saying Goodbye." Overall, VOLCANO is both more varied and more directly involving than its predecessor. Progress, then.

This CD is Edie back in top form. A great CD to play with the fireplace burning and a hot cup of coffee. :O) Edie's songwriting has obviously matured and this CD is getting well-deserved, positive reviews.

For those recalling Ms. Brickell & the New Bohemians in the 90's, and/or her '94 solo effort, "Picture Perfect Morning," Edie has returned with a collection of penned-gems likened to a refreshing breath of fresh air.
Her latest production showcases a more refined lyricist, musically more focused, and an evidently more comfortable, confident Artist.
From her past outings, her eclectic Folk/Pop stylings well-suited her unique vocals. As her soft, sexy vocals developed a smoky tone (though retaining its sexy quality), the focused, pared-down production of "Volcano" works for her all too well.
"Volcano" is a wonderfully welcome album that's sure to please her long-time fans and entice new ones, for those taking the dare to sample.
