LONG TIME COMING may be Jonny Lang's third album, but in terms of creative growth, it may as well be considered a debut for this 22-year-old, who started out as a hotshot teenage guitar prodigy. Teaming with Pink/Aerosmith producer Marti Frederiksen, Lang took five years between albums and emerged with a collection of songs predominantly co-written by himself and Frederiksen, moving him well past an image that found him coming off like a Stevie Ray Vaughn imitator with peach fuzz. Instead, with this outing, Lang not only incorporated more R&B influences into his overall musical style, but his soul singing comes across as significantly more effortless. With just a hint of pop and classic rock in the mix, this lanky musician doles out a few surprises including "Touch," a sparse song brushed with the kind of beats and arrangements you might find on a Justin Timberlake outtake, and "Goodbye Letter" an anthem for broken-hearted suitors everywhere. Among the pleasant surprises included are the raucous roadhouse-flavored "Happiness and Misery," featuring harmonica accompaniment by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, and a gritty, live reading of Stevie Wonder's "Livin' for the City."
Not content to be respected for his talents as an above average blues-rocker, Jonny Lang makes a rather abrupt change on his third album. Unfortunately, it's a change towards a below-average, religiously inspired, hard rocking singer/songwriter. Arriving nearly five years after his last release, there is no problem with Lang realigning himself and staking his claim as a more "adult" musician. But between over-the-top vocals that sound like he's straining to zip up his trousers and turgid tunes that lie languid betwe

Jonny 'the Soul Man' Lang Previously from Mr. Lang's mostly Blues-based albums, specifically his first two, it was his recent "Wander This World" that gave light to his musical inclinations shifting towards proving himself as a songcrafter/vocalist vs. the next Blues-Rock guitar virtuoso.
Thoughout "Wander This World," stinging guitar licks and tasteful accompaniment from his talented band resulted in an overall strong production that showcased this R&B shift. Albeit, this release wasn't as Blues oriented as before, he did a good job on a goal that he openly expressed.
However, on "Long Time Coming," the aforementioned strengths of "Wander This World" seem to be quite diminished production-wise, to the point where when surfacing, they're rather miniscule in relation to the whole. Being the album has a more R&B rooted sound, his vocals are nonetheless stronger.
Giving kudos to making his own path, the two-star rating is just a vote for a more balanced Jonny Lang. If you dissed "Wander This World," "Long Time Coming" will definitely disappoint. If trading Jonny's customary fret work for more up-front R&B vocals, this release may be just your ticket. Submitted by a reviewer (San Jose, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A growing musician This may be hard to take for the die hard blues fans but Mr Lang has been flirting with Motown for a while now. If one listened to "Wander this world" you could see the transition coming. An artist will grow with time and Mr. Lang has done just that.
An added treat is "living for the city"
a live cover of the Stevie Wonders tune recorded live in 2001.
Another personal fave is "dying to live".
Good stuff, check it out Submitted by a reviewer (Chula Vista, Ca.,) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
