Best Of Barber - Adagio For Strings, Agnus Dei, Etc
$10.19 Principally recorded at The Theater Studio & Mindswerve, New York, New York.
Mindless Self Indulgence's brilliantly named The Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy collects more of the group's outré, hip-hop-tinged industrial thrash. Singer Urine's bizarre falsetto sounds like a sped-up Jello Biafra, especially on tracks like "Boomin'" and "I Hate Jimmy Page." The album's 30 songs -- which sport titles like "Dicks Are for My Friends," "Cocaine and Toupees," "Faggot," and "Royally Fucked" -- are all pretty much slight variations on the group's fast-and-shocking style. Though The Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy doesn't quite deliver on the sleazy ...

Best Of Barber - Adagio For Strings, Agnus Dei, Etc
$9.79 This is a collection of NOFX tracks from various compilations, 7"s and EPs, plus a previously unreleased song and dub remix.
NOFX are masters of the punk ethic of self-deprecation, and it begs the question if they truly realize the mark they have made on the history of modern hardcore. After 18 years, the band that sums up its musical prowess humbly as "good," releases a staggering collection of B-sides, compilation tracks, and rare cuts (many of which were previously long out-of-print in their original 7" pressings).
A cover of the Seymour Simons standard "All Of Me" sets the tone for this collection, and boasts an attitude that really says it all; this band lives for doing things their way. It's easy to see how a song such as "Lazy" could have spawned many of the late-'90s neo-ska bands. MXPX also sneaks in a ska treatment of the song made famous ...
| | Easy Star All-Stars Dub Side Of The Moon CD (2003)
Best Of Barber - Adagio For Strings, Agnus Dei, Etc
$10.99 The pun in the title gives the album's conceit away: This is, in fact, a dub-influenced take on Pink Floyd's classic DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. But while the idea may be groan-inducing, the results are actually quite appealing. All-Star founders Michael G. and Ticklah recruit a handful of guests, including Corey Harris, the Meditations, and Frankie Paul, among others, to turn Floyd's spacey, art-rock epic into a heavy-lidded roots excursion, incorporating rap, dancehall, IDM, and jungle rhythms. The deeply ingrained familiarity of the original creates a fine palette for the All-Stars' Jamaican coloring, resulting in a surprisingly successful synthesis.
Recorded at Noise NY, Mount Vernon, New York; Mike Stand Killer Studios, Funky Slip Studios and Zion Studios Brooklyn, New York; 401 Studios and Hot Sound, ...

| | Orquesta Nova CD (1991)
Best Of Barber - Adagio For Strings, Agnus Dei, Etc
$16.55 Orchesta Nova showed an amazing amount of potential on this entirely instrumental and difficult-to-categorize debut. European and Latin American classical music was a strong influence on Nova's founder/conductor Carlos Franzetti, but the orchestral, strings-laden effort also underscored his love of Argentinean tango music (particularly the innovations of bandoneon master Astor Piazzolla) and the type of intellectual third-stream jazz associated with Gunther Schuller. From Piazzolla's music (including "La Muerte Del Angel" and "Oblivion") to gems by Brazil's Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Retrato Em Branco E Preto," "Amparo" and "Por Toda A Minha Vida") and Brazilian classical great Heitor Villa Lobos' "Choro No. 1," this CD never fails to be imaginative. Retailers wondered whether it belonged in the classical or Latin sections, and the ...
