Anonymous instrumental albums have been in existence almost as long as the album format itself, and CMH Records' Pickin' On series carries on the tradition in the field of modern country music. Like 101 Strings, Spectrum, and the other studio-bound ensembles that remade the hits for easy listening in the '60s, the Pickin' On albums often list none of their personnel on the outside packaging, relying instead on the names of their target artists to sell records. Pickin' on Buddy Jewell is devoted to instrumental bluegrass renditions of songs associated with Buddy Jewell, the mainstream country singer who rose to fame via the Nashville Star television program. Eight of the ten melodies are taken from Jewell's self-titled major-label debut, while John D. Loudermilk's "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" (a big hit in the '60s for Eddy Arnold) is the song Jewell sang on the compilation Nashville Star: The Finalists. The tenth cut, "Ole' Buddy," is an original tune by Dennis Caplinger, a studio musician who receives the album's only performance credit. If Caplinger actually played all the instruments himself, then the album is an impressive feat. Pickin' on Buddy Jewell covers a few country music styles ranging from bluegrass to straight country ("Today I Started Loving You Again"). Various instruments are featured on the solos, including mandolin, fiddle, and guitar (electric and acoustic). Pickin' on Buddy Jewell is one of the better albums in the Pickin' On series in that none of the pieces are glaringly inconsistent with the bluegrass theme and all are well played and recorded. ~ Greg Adams Pickin' On Buddy Jewell Music Pickin On Pickin' On Buddy Jewell Songs Pickin' On Buddy Jewell Review

| | Reba Mcentire What If It's You CD (1996)
Pickin' On Buddy Jewell songs
$8.65 With its strong woman's narrative voice, "How Was I To Know" sets the tone of an album that abounds with courageous, spirited female characters. McEntire's lighthearted side shines on songs like "I'd Rather Ride Around With You," the feel-good story of a bridesmaid who runs out on her friend's wedding for a joyride with a guy; even in that carefree context, the theme of independence is clear. There is a sense of lightness and joy throughout WHAT IF IT'S YOU; what's absent, even from the ballads, are the heaviness and overwhelming drama of McEntire's recent releases.
What If It's You doesn't offer any new tricks from Reba McEntire, but it is nevertheless an excellent reminder of her deep talents as a vocalist. The album is slightly uneven, but at its best -- such as on the single "The Fear of Being Alone," "She's Calling it Love" and "I'd Rather Ride Around with You" -- it is as good as ...

Pickin' On Buddy Jewell music CDs
$25.79 Hank Williams was country music's first true superstar, and his songs were a remarkable synthesis of hillbilly elements with a dose of blues and gospel and a clear awareness of Tin Pan Alley techniques, all delivered with a postmodern sensibility that understood that sex and image were a big part of the whole package. He was also heavily conflicted -- much like later soul singers Marvin Gaye and Al Green -- between the secular and the sacred, even going so far as creating a separate persona, Luke the Drifter, to deliver a series of dark, frightening sermons on the dangers of yielding to Saturday night temptation. But yield Williams did, and this tortured soul turned his contradictions into stunning songs like the spooky "Six More Miles to the Graveyard," the beautiful "A Mansion on the Hill," the elegant "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" -- which is as tightly written as a haiku -- and the eerily prophetic "I'll Never Get Out ...
| | Burst Origo CD (2006)
Pickin' On Buddy Jewell songs
$11.59 The big difference between Sweden's Burst and most of the other progressive metal bands of their ilk, like Neurosis, Isis, or compatriots Cult of Luna, is that -- to quote Men in Black: "[Burst] make this look good!" Not in the sense that they're Viking pretty boys or anything, but because their songs manage to be so marvelously compact where others' go on, and on, and on. Indeed, like concentrated cyclones to those bands' vast hurricanes, most of Burst's songs relinquish little in the way of power or complexity, while boasting just as much form-challenging invention. And where this more compressed approach at times made for ...
