Robert Duvall stars as an American hit man seduced by the tango clubs of Buenos Aires in this sizzling tale that's "part gritty crime thriller, part dance-driven romance, part evocative character study" (Hollywood Reporter). Special DVD features include an alternate ending with commentary, deleted scenes with commentary, audio commentary by Robert Duvall and Luciana Pedrazzo. Director Robert Duvall (THE APOSTLE) weaves the disparate worlds of murder and dance in this quirky and sometimes impressionistic comedy drama. John (Robert Duvall), an old-school Coney Island-area hit man, is offered a lucrative job in Argentina. He doesn't really want to take it, and his reluctance to leave his beloved stepdaughter Jenny (Katherine Micheaux Miller) and miss her birthday party fuels his obstinacy. But, assured he will be back in time, he takes the job. Once in Buenos Aries, the assassination plot begins to unfold, then sputter, and finally falls apart as the target fails to show up. Needless to say, John misses Jenny's big day, and to get his mind off of things, he catches a traditional Argentinean tango performance. With a reverence for American dance, John is totally blown away by this thrillingly expressive form, and infiltrates the tango circuit through Manuela (Luciana Pedraza), a glowing but modest partner. She and her sister escort John through the history and motion that is tango, while in the meantime the assassination plot picks back up as the target finally returns to Buenos Aries. Much like the dance it depicts, the film navigates between one world of murderous intrigue and conspiracy, and the other of sensual elegance and high-art aesthetics. Duvall also bridges the gulf between these worlds with an inimitable performance. Theatrical Release Date: March 28, 2003 (NY/LA)

Assassination Tango Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Tango at it's best! I should start by saying that I am involved in the dance world and make it a habit of purchasing any and all movies with a “dance theme” and I am always disappointed with “dance movies”. Also I was an exchange student and lived in Argentina and if not an expert, I have at least first hand knowledge of the country, the people, and more importantly the way Argentineans speak. Because of this, I had very few expectations from this movie, I was pleasantly surprised.
The story line is a bit all over the place, can at times be a bit confusing, and if not for my knowledge of Argentinean Spanish I would have had a hard time following the sometimes long winded dialog; the subtitles work great, but are always a distraction and in most cases the translation is atrocious, a bit better in this instance, but did not catch the nuances of the flowery Argentinean way with words.
In spite of all of the above I found the movie to be highly entertaining, I loved the fact that it was filmed on location, Argentina is a beautiful country with it’s own special feel, just as their way of speaking is completely different from any other in Latin American, so are their cities, the barrios (neighborhoods) in Buenos Aires are so typical and special that you can’t show a street in any other country and call it Argentinean, it is always, in my opinion, a poor imitation. It is also refreshing to see that actors and actresses spoke true Argentinean and not a forced “I’m trying to hide my own accent” language, and last but most definitely not least, the dancing is superb (and that includes Robert Duval), it is dancing at it’s best!
So to surmise: the story line is a bit shaky, but the movie as a whole is good, it not only shows a true glimpse of Argentina and it’s language, but it is one of the best choreographed and danced movies I’ve seen in the past few years.

Duvall at his best! Robert Duvall shows what a talented and versitile actor he is in this movie. Not only is he funny (as an aging mafia hit man), but a quite talented dancer as well. There are plenty of twists and turns to the plot to keep one's interest throughout the movie. The dance sceens with Luciana Pedraza are quite lovely and give an insight into the world that is Tango in South America. I will definately add this one to my collection! Submitted by David (St. Louis, MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
