Recording information: King Diamond's Home, TX; Los Angered Recording, Gothenburg, Sweden; Nomad Recording Studios, Dallas, TX; Solnasound Recording, Sweden. Photographer: Alex Solca. Kim Bendix Petersen, better known as King Diamond, has built an empire out of wailing spirits, singing spiders, and voodoo priestesses. His 11th full-length ghost story, The Puppet Master, centers around an unfortunate man, his girlfriend, and a husband and wife team of puppet masters as they abuse and torture their subjects somewhere in Budapest. Diamond wisely forgoes his usual cheeseball spoken-word intro and simply launches into "Midnight," a melodic dirge that ranks high amongst his huge -- and often inconsistent -- body of work. The brutal "Emerencia" features stellar guitar work from Andy LaRocque -- the thread that binds each and every King Diamond album -- and "The Ritual" aptly deals with the popular heavy metal theme of souls burning in Hell -- lyrical prowess has never been his forte. The remainder of the record is serviceable goth-metal filled with oaths and omens, blood and sacrifice, and one ill-conceived Christmas song. King Diamond has reached a stage in his career where evil has begun to fade into novelty, and The Puppet Master resonates with a dark giddiness that suits a man with face paint and a cape nearing his fifties. However, there's still a sinister aura that surrounds his very name, making it virtually unfathomable to picture him -- and all of his demons -- teeing off with fellow urchin -- and avid golfer -- Alice Cooper on a misty fall morning, heads bowed, asking the dark lord to grant them the power to eagle a par four. Maybe. ~ James Christopher Monger

| Puppet Master Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews great album the best album the king diamond put out to date. Submitted by msteiner1 (overland park ks.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Followed the Wolf... Kings newest album is a great addition to any Diamond Bangers library out there. Although it was lacking a little something from past endevours the album is wicked! For the first time he's added in a female vocalist into the mix and she blends in perfectly. Another brilliant musical story from KD. The DVD is also a nice little touch, having King in a nice laid back environment explaining the story as it unfolds track by track, and his thoughts, being that King isn't easy to get the chance to meet I loved that disk. But anyway, 5 (pointed) stars out of 5! One of my must haves! Submitted by cormyre (Grove City, OH, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

First Listen..no good...5th Listen, Incredible! The first thing that struck me about this latest offering from The King was the lack of stand-out 'hook' songs, the ones that you play a dozen times over before exploring further into your standard CD. Puppet Master doesn't, at first listen, have any tunes on it that made me want to hit "back" on the CD player for a 2nd listen. And I was left disappointed.
Then..while working....I popped it in again, for a 2nd listen...this time as background music. An hour later I found myself not working, just listening. As all of KD's discs are concept, this one especially requires you to go through the whole thing front to back to really "set the mood".
Now on my XXth listen, I'm enjoying it much more. The closest thing to a "stand out" song would be "Blood to Walk", but it lacks the visceral intensity of his other "video-friendly" tunes...
It takes some getting used to, and its pace isn't nearly as frantic or charged as other KD offerings, but given a few listens front to back, it all starts to blend, and then it really works.
The addition of the female singer is not overdone and works well. The disc finished a bit on the weak side but based on the story it had to be that way, so its understandable....
Its good KD, just beware: demon-sign waving, head-banging tunes are not necessarly to be found on this one. Submitted by headrusch1 (Hartford) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Long Live the King!! The Puppet Master kind of takes me back to the "Conspiracy","Them" days. Great story telling, as always, great guitar work. A much improvement over the disappointing House of God. A must have for any King collector. Submitted by a reviewer (NewStanton, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
