Having survived their turbulent one-album stint with journeyman vocalist Tomas Lindberg (ex-At the Gates), Swede speedsters the Crown reunited with original howler Johan Lindstrand and got down to (sort of) serious business for their sixth album, Possessed 13. Instantly noticeable is the record's production, courtesy of Studio Fredman: a nice, thick, full-bodied lager designed to be slugged down in big gulps, resulting in maximum death/thrash drunkenness. That's one improvement the group has made over past releases, the second being its increasingly smart songwriting ethic, maintaining relatively hectic arrangements and lickety-split tempos without falling face-first into a mudhole of empty exercises in musicianship. "Are You Morbid?" is a not-too-subtle nod to Celtic Frost in title only, forgoing the classic band's trademark sludge riffs for a speedy romp outdoing death & roll-era Entombed at its own game; also notable are the creeping death-trudge of instrumental "Dream Bloody Hell," the smart, midtempo hooks of "Bow to None," and "Morningstar Rising," which deftly trades between rattling blastbeats and double-time thrash polkas. Even better, the Crown seem to possess a sense of humor and self-awareness translating to the cover art, which recalls the poster of an old B-grade horror flick, and is further fueled by borderline-silly but fun tracks "Zombiefied!," old-school Metallica-style barnburner "Kill 'Em All" (which goes so far as to blatantly rip off the legendary double-bass break of Slayer's "Angel of Death"), and "Face of Destruction -- Deep Hit of Death," all of which playfully toy with clichés, tongues slightly in cheek (see also: Babylon Whores, Children of Bodom). Possessed 13 is a solid effort sometimes dipping into the exceptional, and while the group seems to constantly remind one of its (obvious) influences, it still doesn't detract from this album's entertainment value. [Initial printings of Possessed 13 featured a bonus disc sporting tracks of varying degrees of uselessness to casual fans: 11 early, raw demo cuts, a Bathory cover ("Burnin' Leather"), and a studio outtake from 1999 ("Rebel Angel").] ~ John Serba
Recorded at Studio Fredman, Sweden.
The Crown includes: John Lindstrand (vocals); Marcus Sunesson, Marko Tervonen (guitar); Magnus Olsfelt (bass); Janne Saarenpaa (drums).

Now this is death metal Ever wanted to be completely blown away by your stereo? Well here it is, blast beats, great riffs, awesome powerful vocals from Johan. What an absolute power surch of ungodly insanity and beauty. Makes me go off everyday. Pass this if you enjoy anything remotely commercial. Too bad the band called it quits. BRUTAL DEATH METAL IT IS GREAT TO HAVE THESE GUYS BACK TOGETHER! THE VOCALS KICK AZZ!(JOHAN-YOU F***IN' RULE!) A FEW TWISTS ARE UNEXPECTED, BUT THATS WHAT MAKES 'THE CROWN', STAND OUT FROM ALL THE REST. THIS ALBUM IS ALLREADY A CLASSIC IN MY BOOK. TO DO WHAT THEY DID WITH THESE SONGS, IS JUST SIMPLY AMAZING.(RE-BOOTED TO FIT INTO THIS MILLINIUM). FROM THE OPENING TRACK(W/ FREAKY SOUNDS)TO THEIR FINAL DEPARTURE, IS BRUTAL STANCE POSSISSIONING AT ITS BEST. TO SUM IT UP- THE CROWN WILL BE WHAT ALL BANDS (OF THIS GENRE) WISH THEY COULD BE LIKE. THIS ALBUM IS PURE IN YOUR FACE WITH AN AXE TEAR IT UP NOW MOTHER F***ER!(CAN'T WAIT FOR THE RE-RELEASE OF CROWNED IN TERROR W/ JOHANS VOCALS) JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THIS BAND. Kim Bendix Petersen, better known as King Diamond, has built an empire out of wailing spirits, singing spiders, and voodoo priestesses. His 11th full-length ghost story, The Puppet Master, centers around an unfortunate man, his girlfriend, and a husband and wife team of puppet masters as they abuse and torture their subjects somewhere in Budapest. Diamond wisely forgoes his usual cheeseball spoken-word intro and simply ...

Possessed 13
$10.05 Appropriately following the previous year's Meisterwerk 1 compilation, this 2001 release draws from My Dying Bride's catalog to form a track list of fan favorites (as voted on the group's website) and imports/rarities. Fortunate to be graced with material from the superior Turn Loose the Swans and Light at the End of the World, it would have been nice to hear a number from the controversial 34.788%...Complete on either of the two collections, but that isn't how the fans voted, so both retrospectives focus on material from only a few of the band's releases. My Dying Bride explained that the Top Ten songs were too long to fit on one disc, so the picks were divided and the room that remained was filled with more experimental material many fans haven't heard, which seems to defeat the purpose of a "hits" collection. Perhaps the band divided the project into two releases just to allow Peacevill the chance to charge almost double for what easily could have been one product. The "experimental" material doesn't stand up, making the second half of both records pretty unenjoyable -- and hard to recommend. So new fans might want to just purchase one of the group's better releases (Turn Loose the Swans or As the Flower Withers) as a starting point. Only My Dying Bride completists should worry about pursuing either of the Meisterwerk volumes. ~ Vincent Jeffries
