(1 Customer Review)
Japanese version of 2002 album from the street-kid punk outfit features 13 tracks including 1 bonus track, 'Solvent'. Hellcat/Sony.
The Distillers: Brody Armstrong (vocals, guitar); Casper (guitar, background vocals); Ryan (bass, background vocals); Andy Outbreak (drums). Engineers include: Kevin Guineri, Donnel Cameron, Brett Gurewitz. Principally recorded at Westlake Studios, Hollywood, California between May and June 2001. Led by punk chanteuse Brody Armstrong, political hardcore band the Distillers return with their second album, 2002's SING SING DEATH HOUSE, featuring "Seneca Falls" and "I Am a Revenant." Japanese edition adds an extra song. This authentic, damaged, street-kid punk outfit boasts the magnificent, mouth-full-of-marbles gutter-punk accent of Brody, wife of Rancid's Tim Armstrong. (Both slur their vocals in a similar fashion.) Improving on their very fine, self-titled debut album, their latest, Sing Sing Death House, is battle-scarred and resolute, but Brody's tough voice is more expressive than your average punker's and especially affecting when she flaunts the full range of her throaty snarl. On "Seneca Falls," an appreciation of the women's suffrage movement set to chugging guitars and a thumpity-thump bass, there's an exceptional, goosebump-inducing though unintelligible chorus, which soars above the music because of the emotional quality of Brody's howl. Otherwise, the music is quite stirring, coming from a gang of gutter-punks with lip piercings. The song "The Young Crazed Peeling" is about having a crap upbringing, surviving, and actually becoming a happily married punk. After telling the story of how her mom kicked her dad out of the house because he beat her up, Brody goes on to sing about how life has gotten better, "I love a man from California/He's the prettiest thing/We got the same disorder/The way you feel is okay/It's never going to change anyway/It hit me/I got everything I need." It's a story with an uncharacteristic ending that punks born of squalor can rise up and create music as impassioned and relatively positive as this. ~ Adam Bregman

| | Josh White Empty Bed Blues CD (2003)
Sing Sing Death House
$11.19 Reissue from the '60s folk revival, led by Elektra Records, this should help reestablished a place in music history for this remarkable musician who has received relatively scant attention in blues circles over the past decades. 10 tracks. Sepiatone. 2003.
Personnel includes: Josh White (vocals, guitar). Personnel: Josh White (vocals, guitar). Liner Note Author: Scott Barretta. Empty Bed Blues was Josh White's farewell recording for Elektra, the record label that helped (re)introduce him to the mainstream during the height of the '60s folk revival. To look at the sexy -- and risqué for 1962 -- cover, one would think that half of the tunes, stately renditions of gospel songs, wouldn't be at home on the album. But considering that the ribald, innuendo-laden first side is belied by White's silky voice and mellifluous guitar, he almost makes the juke-joint rave-ups sound like show tunes. Given his role as elder statesmen of acoustic blues, you'd be forgiven for thinking that White didn't need to be rediscovered as such, but sadly he did. Although considering this album, "reinvented" ...

| | Kingdom Unitas CD (2005) (Import) Digipak; Sweden
Sing Sing Death House
$9.69 The Kingdom: Charles Westmoreland. The short and appealingly quirky debut by the Kingdom, Unitas claims to be a fictionalized biography of the legendary Baltimore Colts quarterback, but don't believe it for a second. The only through-line on this album is the way each short, punchy, indie rock tune is preceded by a distorted female voice with a possibly fake British accent, detailing the title ...
