SINGS THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY SONGBOOK was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
Bette Midler occupies a unique place in the world of pop vocalists; she's recorded in so many styles (blowsy rockers, glossy pop ballads, intimate cabaret) that she's impossible to pigeonhole. So it's not such a shock to find her reaching back to an earlier era of pop singing for THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY SONGBOOK. In paying tribute to her beloved Clooney, Midler engages the services of none other than MOR icon Barry Manilow as arranger, a role he played for her before embarking on his solo career. This is far from a by-the-numbers stroll through the Clooney catalog, though. Midler and Manilow dip into smooth jazz ("Come On-A My House"), boogie-woogie ("On a Slow Boat to China"), Americana ("This Ole House"), and orchestrated jazz ("Hey There") among other modes, introducing these Clooney-associated tunes to a whole new generation.

This is not a copy of Rosemary Clooney songs but but whole new arrangements. I give it a top rating because all of the songs excelled in so many areas. Take great artists & give them excellent arrangements & have it all captured with the highest technical skill to make this a timeless ear pleasing treasure. "Slow Boat to China" is a joy. Midler At Her Best I grew up listening to Rosemary Clooney and saw her in several movies - I loved her voice and know it well. Midler sounds so much like her - she has done a remarkable job and the CD is truly a tribute to one of the greatest singers of her time. less is more? As expected, I ran out and bought Bette Midler as I always will when she comes up with a new disc. I have never been disappointed. The music on this CD is wonderful. But wait - 34 mintues? Come on, Bette. Is this the industry's answer to coming down on prices? We'll pay less and get a lot less? In this day of 75 minute plus CD's, there is no excuse for utilizing less than half of the capacity of this wonderful music format. Get with the program, Bette!!! Classic Representation of the Songs True to the original, Barry Manilow has produced another masterpiece - this time with one of the best voices around, Bette Midler. When you listen to this collection of wonderful songs that Rosemary Clooney made famous, you will (if you were around then) remember the way music use to sound - CLASSIC. SO what if it has been done before; putting together these two talents to make such an album is what the industry needs today in the deluge of CR*P being distributed.
Being a fan of both of these artists helps but even for the "new" listener this is a great recording of wonderful songs not to be missed. Submitted by a reviewer (San Diego, CA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sings The Rosemary Clooney Songbook album
$9.99 IT HAD TO BE YOU was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best
Given former rock god Rod Stewart's transformation over the course of the '90s into the world's favorite pop balladeer, it's perhaps no great surprise that he should take on the Great American Songbook in the classic style. Certainly lesser talents than his have gone down that road to no small amount of commercial success. And with the help of Clive Davis--who's helped other old-school rock icons reinvent themselves--how could IT HAD TO BE YOU not spell success? Turns out Rod's raspy tenor fits nicely into old familiar tunes like "These Foolish Things" and "The Very Thought of You," but then, he was always a romantic at heart, he just hadn't figured out how to tap into his inner Bryan Ferry. One might question the presence ...

$8.99 AS TIME GOES BY VOL. 2 was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
On his second album tackling the Great American Songbook of the album's subtitle, Rod Stewart sounds even more energized, and seems to insert more of himself into his delivery of gems by the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, et al. Though two veteran pop-rock producers (Richard ...

After the unexpected runaway success of COME AWAY WITH ME, where to next? The good news about Norah Jones's sophomore effort is that she and producer Arif Mardin decided to leave well enough alone in most regards. There are no screeching guitars, thumping drum machines, or padding synthesizers, and most of the tempos are slow ...
