Innovative progressive rockers Pentangle play nine of their evocative songs on this 1972 release.
Pentangle were at the top of the British folk-rock heap, easily the equal of contemporaries like Fairport Convention, but their commercial peak came in 1969 with BASKET OF LIGHT. The last album the original lineup made before running out of steam altogether was 1972's SOLOMON'S SEAL. While the album features the band's trademark mix of folk, rock, and jazz, the double guitar threat of John Renbourn and Bert Jansch and the study-in-contrasts vocal interplay of Jansch and Jacqui McShee, there's a greater clarity and focus to the sound. While this results in less raw immediacy than Pentangle enjoyed on some of their earlier albums, it also makes for a more deliberate overall feel; in other words, the last album of the band's initial incarnation is probably the one that came out most closely to what they intended.
First time on CD for this much sought after classic folk album originally issued on Reprise in 1972. Nine tracks. Slipcase. Castle. 2003.The Wire (p.41) - "Jansch is in notably better voice than usual delivering his compositions 'People On The Highway' and 'Jump Baby Jump'..." Solomon's Seal songs
$17.09 Presenting both live and studio recordings, Pentangle's second album, SWEET CHILD, is considered by many to be the British folk group's finest offering. It's easy to hear why: all that makes the ensemble so great is on full display, from Jacqui McShee's resonant voice on the traditional "So Early in the Spring" to Bert Jansch and John Renbourn's snaky guitar lines on a dexterous reading of jazz legend Charles Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" ...

Solomon's Seal CD music
$9.79 Donovan's last truly great album of the 1960s, 1968's BARABAJAGAL shows interesting artistic growth at least as marked as his transformation from folk troubadour to daffy hippie-pop guru. The title track and "Trudi" feature the Rod Stewart-era Jeff Beck Group as Donovan's backing band; consequently both these songs have a surprising amount of sonic heft to them.
Of course, Donovan is pretty much incapable of getting heavy, but the hard-candy pop suits him well. A version of Terry Reid's marijuana/fellatio multiple-entendre "Superlungs My Supergirl" is similarly rockin', but for most of the rest of the album, Donovan reverts to his usual folkish psych-pop. The hit "Atlantis," the Cat Stevens-like "I Love My Shirt" and the unexpectedly tender "To Susan On the West Coast Waiting" are also highlights.
Donovan was in a tremendously creative phase during the latter part ...

Solomon's Seal music CDs
$14.65 No matter which way you look at it, Deke Dickerson is cut from a rare musical cloth. Guitarist, vocalist, producer, bandleader, recording engineer, independent record label owner, musical archeologist and rock 'n' roll fanatic are just a few of the hats he wears, and he seemingly tosses more onto the rack on a daily basis. To the uninitiated, attending one of his shows or buying one of his albums is like spinning a musical roulette wheel in a casino where everybody wins and the prizes are the 20th century's greatest forms of American musical expression. His band the Ecco-Fonics might include a steel guitar, a saxophone, a fiddle or a piano player, or it might just consist of Deke, his doubleneck guitar and a rhythm section. Chances are he'll thrash and twang like Link Wray, finger pick like Merle Travis, go for broke with the speed and dexterity of Joe Maphis or Larry Collins or head for outer space like Les Paul all in one set, while his rock solid rhythm and electrified energy keep the dance floor filled at all times. His set list might consist of the Easybeats' Aussie garage stomper "She So Fine," Hollywood honky-tonker Skeets McDonald's "Don't Push Me Too Far," Donald Jenkins' '60s Chi-Town soul gem "Wang Dang Dula," the Coasters' "The Hatchet Man" or the Treniers' X-rated R&B opus "Poon-Tang." You might hear the best version of "White Lightnin'" this side of George Jones or the most slamming rendition of "Mexicali Rose" this side of Jerry Lee Lewis, Grandpa Jones' rock 'n' roll heartbreaker "Hello Blues," Ernie Chaffin's Johnny Cash-esque "Feelin' Low," an undeservedly obscure Elvis song like "Adam and Evil" and once in a while, even a rare dose of Joan Jett or Van Halen. But no matter which page ...
