The full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy that launched the band to international superstardom, written almost entirely by Pete Townshend. Hailed as a breakthrough upon its release, its critical standing has diminished somewhat in the ensuing decades because of the occasional pretensions of the concept and because of the insubstantial nature of some of the songs that functioned as little more than devices to advance the rather sketchy plot. Nonetheless, the double album has many excellent songs, including "I'm Free," "Pinball Wizard," "Sensation," "Christmas," "We're Not Gonna Take It," and the dramatic ten-minute instrumental "Underture." Though the album was slightly flawed, Townshend's ability to construct a lengthy conceptual narrative brought new possibilities to rock music. Despite the complexity of the project, he and the Who never lost sight of solid pop melodies, harmonies, and forceful instrumentation, imbuing the material with a suitably powerful grace. ~ Richie Unterberger The definitive rock opera, TOMMY liberated the Who from a "singles band" stigma, marking them as a substantial artistic force. Composer Pete Townshend had flirted with the conceptual format on two previous releases, but here his vision is spread over two ambitious records that play to the Who's main strengths. Anthems such as the raucous "Pinball Wizard" and the surprisingly serene "I'm Free" emphasize the kinetic power of the band, while Townshend's cast of characters (the perverted Uncle Ernie, the inscrutable Tommy) reveals a wild and unconventional imagination. Townshend even incorporates Sonny Boy Williamson's "Eyesight to the Blind" as part of his fable about the "deaf, dumb, and blind kid," making a successful reference to the past in what is an undeniably groundbreaking and forward-looking achievement. SACD at its best A double album on a single SACD. I have not fully explored disc 2, however the main album is compete on disc 2. The instrumentals are awesome and the vocals are crisp. A must have for your SACD collection. Submitted by Scott F. (Morristown NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A sonic masterpiece This deluxe edition of The Who's "Tommy" is another example of a classic album getting the TLC it deserves. I don't need to say anything about the music because numerous volumes have already been written about that. You need to buy this disc because the sound is unbelievable!! Kudos to Pete Townshend and Universal for providing us with a new version that takes full advantage of the technology available today. Unbelievable I have always loved Tommy, but I think that I have finally heard it in the way it was meant to be heard. Crystal clear! A must have for any SACD user. If we can find a way to have more albums sound like this, SACD will be here to stay! Submitted by a reviewer (Rochester, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Surround doesn't get any better. The new Tommy 5.1 is the best offering so far. Finally this is the way surround sound should be. An excellent mix by Mr. Townsend even though he is partially deaf, not dumb and blind of course. He keeps the mix solid without instruments flying around your head. Quality of the actual sound is superior to the 1996 remix but is certainly not up to today's standards.
The outtakes included are a nice to have for fans only and are, in the case of Sally Simpson, heartwarming and side splitting. Great demos by Pete make this a must have collection which does include the original mix from the original master tapes for the very first time or at least we hope.
What are you waiting for go buy this and cross your fingers that Quadrophenia is coming out soon. Viva la SACD. Submitted by a reviewer (San Antonio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
