| | Jimmy Williams Guitar Concepts CD Jimmy Williams Discography of CDs
Jimmy Williams, began playing guitar at the age of 13. His formal years began with lessons from his father, who began showing Jimmy various licks and barre chords. It wasn't long before he discovered Eddie Van Halen and performed "Eruption" in his high school talent show during his sophomore year. A few years later Jimmy happened upon a new discovery, a young Swedish virtuoso by the name of Yngwie J. Malmsteen. At this point Jimmy began feverishly practicing 6 hours a day to get his chops up to par with the flood of Shrapnel style neoclassical guitarists that began to flood the scene. In college, while obtaining his B.S. in Electrical engineering, Jimmy played in jazz big bands, combos, and studied classical / flamenco guitar. In 1994 Jimmy was selected to be featured in Guitar Magazine's "Resume Column" and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. After playing in numerous L.A. bands, Jimmy took a two-year hiatus from music to train with many Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters, including legends such as Bas Ruttan and Marco Ruas. After a few injuries Jimmy realized that guitar playing and MMA don't quite mix and decided to pursue a musical journey once again. In 2000 Jimmy answered the call and joined Nuclear Blast Records Recording Artists Steel Prophet. In 2001 the band released the highly acclaimed album "Book of the Dead" and completed full tours of America and Europe. In August of 2001 we signed Mr. Williams to a two-album deal. Jimmy's first release for Progressive Arts Music is titled "Guitar Concepts". The album is comprised of 10 songs that were recorded on a 4-track recorder from 1999-2000. The album is full of well thought out arrangements, awesome groove and melody, and of course, blistering shred when the moment arises. "Guitar Concepts" is a creative journey through various moods, styles and time signatures. About the material, Jimmy had this to say: "I try to keep an open mind because I believe all musical styles have something to offer. My primary goal is to write music that is both enjoyable for me to play and also entertaining to musicians and non-musicians alike. I hope you enjoy it."

Guitar Concepts music CDs
$10.39 Throughout the history of punk, just when it seems like the scene has turned into a wave of mediocre soundalike bandwagon jumpers, some band releases an album that gives grizzled old scene veterans hope that at least someone out there still gets it. The third full-length by Modern Life Is War is, on the surface, not really all that different from releases by any number of similar post-hardcore acts, but Midnight in America has enough personality to make it interesting on its own merits. There's an unexpected bluesy vibe to this album, not in the imitative Jack White way, but more in the tradition of the Gun Club and the Birthday Party, two early-'80s post-punk acts whose fondness for corrosive noise was filtered through a warped extension of early Delta blues. It makes sense, really: after all, what is blues but the original emo? Modern Life Is War don't really sound anything like the Gun Club or the Birthday Party -- and despite their update/first-person revision of the standard "Stagger Lee," no one will ever mistake them for Mississippi John Hurt -- but singer Jeffrey Eaton has a similarly haunted tone to his vocals, and the melodic hardcore of the band's previous releases has been slowed down, scuzzed up, and allowed to breathe in a way that enhances the songs' hooks. The addition of two minute-long slices of old-school hardcore, the anti-nostalgia "Fuck the Sex Pistols" and "Pendulum," only reinforces the musical depth of superior tracks like the opening "Useless Generation" and the righteous spleen of "The Motorcycle Boy Reigns." ~ Stewart Mason
For a band that's only about three years old, Modern Life Is War have managed to establish a surprisingly mature and developed sound. Whether that sound is to your liking will depend on how angry at the world you are, and how much you notice great chord progressions when they're embedded in dense distortion ...
