| | A Perfect Circle Thirteenth Step CD - Import A Perfect Circle Discography of CDs
With its sophomore effort, THIRTEENTH STEP, A Perfect Circle permanently sheds any clinging notions of being a Tool side-project. Although Maynard James Keenan's plaintive vocals immediately conjure up thoughts of his other outfit, APC distinguishes itself by furthering the melodic elements present on the group's first outing, MER DE NOMS. "The Package" starts things off slowly, with a foreboding guitar line and minimal drum cadence that gradually build into a full-blown Sabbath-like dirge. Carried along by the fluid bass playing of Jeordie White (formerly known as Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson), "The Noose" gives a tip of the hat to the Cure's gloomiest work, while White and guitarist Billy Howerdel create an entrancingly chiming bass/guitar tapestry on "Blue."
Though many of the album's tracks surge with APC's powerful metal riffs, the folky "A Stranger" and the lush "The Nurse Who Loved Me" both feature Keenan's voice supported by a gorgeous bed of strings and little else. A cycle that touches on themes of corruption, despair, and redemption, THIRTEENTH STEP is brought to a fitting conclusion by "Gravity," a powerful song that captures both the dark and light aspects of this fascinating band.
Japanese version of their 2003 album features12 tracks including an exclusive extended version of 'The Package'. Includes the same amount of tracks as all other pressings. Copy Control. EMI.
Japanese release contains an extended version of "The Package."
A Perfect Circle: Maynard James Keenan (vocals, gourd); Billy Howerdel (guitar, piano, bass, programming, background vocals); Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar); Jeordie White (bass); Josh Freese (drums, percussion).
Rolling Stone (10/2/03, p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The band's second album, THIRTEENTH STEP, sounds more like the dusky thrum of DISINTEGRATION-era Cure than it does any of the members' previous bands..." Entertainment Weekly (9/19/03, pp.86-7) - "...Frontman James Maynard Keenan sounds as elliptically tortured as ever....his band's winding, off-kilter rhythms and contrapunctal guitar riffs create an omnious atmosphere..." - Rating: B Q (11/03, p.105) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Keenan's voice is naked and clean....[The songs] affirm that Keenan is more than capable of writing bewitchingly unique songs..." Mojo (Publisher) (11/03, p.131) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The frisson of anxiety crackles, brought to nervous pitch by fretful trash-can drumming, pomp rock guitar and disquieting and pervasive bass..." Purchase Thirteenth Step CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Donny Hathaway In Performance CD (1980) (Import) Germany; Netherlands
Thirteenth Step album
$12.65 Donny Hathaway's live soul album IN PERFORMANCE includes "To Be Young, Gift and Black" and "We Need You Right Now."
Though largely revered for his studio recordings, it was on-stage that Donny Hathaway truly became a giant diamond in a sea of gems. Much like his excellent 1972 Live recording and the stellar 2004 These Songs for You, Live!, In Performance features Hathaway taking his audience to church in a way that can only be described as unique, as he truly had an individual stage presence that few others could hope to rival. In Performance isn't necessarily better than those aforementioned excellent records, but it complements them extremely well, with gritty versions of "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" and "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" leading the charge. As usual, Hathaway's delivery is electric and as sincere as a soul artist could possibly get. In Performance's sole flaw is its length. When the audience applause from the finale, "Sack Full of Dreams," has faded, one is likely to find that the ...
| | Katatonia Night Is The New Day CD (2009)
Thirteenth Step CD music
$14.29 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has moved in an increasingly melodic direction, even covering songs by Will Oldham and Jeff Buckley. It's unsurprising to learn that Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt ...

Thirteenth Step music CDs
$10.39 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared ...

| | Odin Fight For Your Life CD (2001)
Thirteenth Step music CDs
$13.15 Although you wouldn't know it from their embarrassing depiction in the infamous The Decline of Western Civilization, Pt. 2 rockumentary, Odin were once a relatively well-respected band -- at least by the horrendously vapid standards of L.A.'s mid-'80s hair metal scene. Locked in a deadly struggle between technically advanced trad metal and lowest-common-denominator cock rock, the group wound up choosing the latter to its eventual ruin, but not before recording a body of work subscribing to both trends (sometimes at once) and, in lieu of an actual record deal, being profiled postmortem by 2001's Fight for Your Life collection. Quite the mixed bag, as you'd imagine, it's tellingly when Odin are at their glam-numbskull sleaziest (sub-Ratt-isms like "I Get What I Want" and "I'm Gonna Get You") that they fail most absolutely -- no thanks to vocalist Randy O and his squawking nasal falsetto. His lower registers don't rankle nearly as much, though, and guitarist Jeff Duncan's Eddie Van Halen-inspired histrionics rarely rankle at all. In fact, they take center stage on strongest tracks "12 O'Clock High" and "Love Action," while on the spare acoustic instrumental "Serenade to the Court," it's the influence of the late Randy Rhoads that comes through loud and clear. Another winning tandem, "Modern ...
