For years Iona loyalists have been saying "but you must see them live" in defense of their lengthy, ambient-laden instrumentals and sometimes partially realized studio concepts. They have a point to an extent. A greater intensity and sense of purpose does exist in this two-disc live set, but invariably, whenever that dynamic reveals itself, Iona drifts further from anything inherently Celtic, and closer to '70s pop/prog like Camel, Renaissance and Genesis (which isn't a knock, because Iona doesn't place labels on themselves). An obvious exception is the previously unrecorded reel medley, "Mountain Road/Ivy Leaf/Hunter's Purse/Rip the Calico," which boasts a stunning seven-minute uilleann pipes clinic by Troy Donockley. Now that's Celtic rock! "When I Survey," utilizing the traditional melody of "Waly Waly" and the lyrics of 17th-century English theologian/hymn writer Isaac Watts, is sure to please devotees of both the folk-rock and progressive camps. Lead vocalist Joanne Hogg displays tendencies that evoke comparisons to Karen Matheson and Annie Haslam. Evidently, guitarist Dave Bainbridge picked up a few tips from Robert Fripp (who appeared on their previous two studio albums), as his epic, impressionistic 12-minute guitar intro on "Survey" eventually gives way to a fiery solo which wouldn't sound out of place on an early-'70s King Crimson ...

Although not purely a concept album like 'Book of Kells', the album has several themes upon which much of the material is based. The title track is based around words from Psalm 139, was written at a time when the band were searching for the way forward after the departure of founder member David Fitzgerald.Dave purchased a book called 'Celtic Fire', a book which amongst other things contains the story of St. Brendan and the voyage he reputedly made across the Atlantic ocean in the 6th century with 14 monks in a coracle.Dave Bainbridge and the other members of the band soon became fascinated by this epic story of faith and obedience to God and how it seemed to tie in with the band's thinking at that time.

This is the second release by the Christian progressive rock band Iona. Like their first release, and now to a greater degree, Iona's music is quite challenging to listen to. With multi-layered instrumentation, forever changing moods, and lyrics that require constant attention, this music is not easily digested. And this 72-minute album, centered on The Book of Kells, necessitates a thorough listen if one desires to understand and appreciate its concept in total. There's plenty to keep one's interest too, like Joanne Hogg's angelic voice, David Bainbridge's skillful guitar work, or the hypnotic flutes, whistles, and Irish pipes. However, inherent with such lengthy albums is the presence of filler material, so if you're in search of inspirational or passionate rock & roll, most of The Book of Kells will undoubtedly fall into the filler category. Actually, this music seems like it's intended for a mystical motion picture soundtrack. In a way, it all ready is. Given the deep thought and consideration required to understand this album fully, it does serve as a soundtrack for the mind's eye. ~ Dave Sleger

Long before Patti LaBelle's tenure as an adult-contemporary star in the 1980s and '90s, and before her group LaBelle unleashed their sexy, space-aged funk in the '70s, Patti and groupmates Cynthia Birdsong, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendryx had their earliest incarnation as Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles. (Dash and Hendryx were also in LaBelle during the '70s.) SWEETHEARTS OF THE APOLLO is a fine early snapshot of the group, capturing them in live performance. This 1995 release brings together Clannad's ambient sound with their Celtic roots and pop sensibility. "Seanchas," the second track, probably evinces this best. A song about Irish folk lore sung entirely in Irish, this song is replete with the slick drumming of L.A. studio guru Vinny Colaiuta and Mel Collins' "smooth jazz" saxophone stylings. Moreover, Maire Brennan's distant vocals reverberate on this track, adding a sheen of mystique to the music.
Other songs such as "A Bridge (That Carries Us Over)" and "From Your Heart" follow suit quite similarly, with the exception of the English lyrics. He also plays mandolin, banjo, and bass and even attempts to play a tune or two on the fiddle. Joe is the supervisor for the custodial department at the Davis County School District and enjoys his time off to play music.Gary Fisher-- Gary has been performing and playing with Bluegrass Addiction since 1991. Also a founding member, he plays mandolin, sings lead and tenor harmony, and sometimes even sings bass. Gary also plays guitar, bass, and banjo, and has recently been testing his patience at playing fiddle. He has recently written a song from our latest release entitled" Take Me Home". His "Flat Iron" gives the band that sound that separates us from other groups.
