That's Where It's At album
$9.95 On this 1965 session for Blue Note, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean leads a stellar ensemble that includes trumpeter Lee Morgan and drummer Billy Higgins. All of the musicians are in excellent form here, with McLean and Morgan offering up tightly woven melodic threads that carefully unfurl into outstanding solos. Higgins's commanding kit work, however, garners as ...
| | Beatles Capitol Albums Vol. 2 CDs (2006) Box Set; Brick
That's Where It's At CD music
$57.45 The songs appear in both their mono and stereo mixes (the latter is a particular enticement since the tracks from, say, BEATLES FOR SALE were previously available only in mono). The set also features the original stereo mixes of HELP! and RUBBER SOUL (which are different from the digital remixes that appear on the standard issue CDs of those albums). Naturally, the music is fantastic, and with the remarkable ...
| | Melody Gardot My One And Only Thrill CD (2009)
That's Where It's At music CDs
$12.09 Although the plaudits for Melody Gardot's debut album, WORRISOME HEART, were entirely justified, it sometimes seemed as if the young singer-songwriter's compelling personal story--hit by a car and severely injured at the age of 19, the aspiring fashion designer began playing piano and writing songs as part of her physical therapy--overshadowed ...
| | Gerald Wilson Detroit CD (2009)
That's Where It's At songs
$14.29 Detroit comprises a six-composition suite commissioned for the 2009 thirtieth anniversary Detroit International Jazz Festival, played in the studio with musicians from composer/arranger Gerald Wilson's Los Angeles home or New York City area. Curiously, there are no Motor City-based players on the disc, but the themes are based in certain locales from the industrial Midwestern City that has fallen on hard economic times but played a pivotal role in the development of Wilson's highly developed skills as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. A quite spirited and energetic music is heard here from the 90-year-old Wilson, whose charm and wit would rival anyone many decades his junior. It's a swinging affair molded in the traditional big-band visage of Count Basie, Ernie Wilkins, or early Quincy Jones, with Wilson's deft touch for embellishing the blues. Players like trumpeter Sean Jones, son/guitarist Anthony Wilson, violinist Yvette Devereaux, the fine pianist Brian O'Rourke, and particularly L.A. alto saxophonist and flutist Randall Willis or Kamasi Washington on tenor sax, spice up the band's ensemble and solo contributions. The suite begins with "Blues on Belle Isle," a bopping tribute ...
| | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
That's Where It's At album
$6.25 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its ...

| | Cajun String Bands-The 1930'S: Cajun Breakdown CD (1997)
That's Where It's At music CDs
$13.59 25 Cajun tracks from the 1930s, reflecting the transition of Cajun music to arrangements that placed the fiddle at the fore and did away with the accordion. Almost half of the cuts belong to J.B. Fuselier, with four by Leo Soileau, one by the Dixie Ramblers, and seven by Luderin Darbone, fiddler of the Hackberry Ramblers (who back him on the selections here). Fuselier sounds like early Western swing with a Cajun fiddle; Clifford Breaux has a rawer, ...

| | Lakshminarayana Shankar Song For Everyone CD (1984) Digipak
That's Where It's At songs
$9.95 Song for Everyone heralds the return of the groove in Shankar's East-West-minded music, with former Shakti colleague Zakir Hussain on tabla, Trilok Gurtu on percussion, and Shankar's own manipulation of a drum machine tending to the rhythms. The result is a brighter, more outgoing record than its predecessor Vision, veering between Western acoustic and electric grooves and the complex beats churned out by the tabla. Jan Garbarek again shines beams of light on soprano and tenor, engaging Shankar's ten-string double-necked electric violin in some complex interplay on the title track. Some tracks are ...
