| | Lil' Jon Certified Crunk CD Lil' Jon Discography of CDs
(20 Customer Reviews)
CERTIFIED CRUNK is packaged with cover art simulating the low-budget "mixtape" CDs one can find populating the sidewalks of any city worth its hip-hop salt, a shout out to the spirit of the streets and the creativity of the DJs, putting out inventive remix and mix albums. Lil Jon did indeed start off as a DJ, and in that spirit, CERTIFIED CRUNK captures the flavor of the mixtapes and the feel of a party. The album compiles some of Lil Jon's earlier tracks (before he crossed over into the mainstream) and follows on the heels of his infectious and successful breakthrough, KINGS OF CRUNK.
That said, much of the record's beats are spare in the spirit of the genre--almost hypnotically so--and drenched in a haze that allows the band to provide some surprises. For an album immersed in sex and dance-floor shaking, the intro track, "Get Crunk," features a refreshingly progressive call-response imploring women to shout that they are neither "tricks" nor "hoes" nor "skanks," and men to scream they are not pimps. More of a collection (actually done without the input of Lil Jon) than an official album, CERTIFIED CRUNK offers a nice insight into the makings of these kings of crunk.

Hailing from Atlanta, GA, the hardcore trio Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz are the premier practitioners of the southern rap sub-genre colloquially dubbed "crunk." The style is exemplified by forceful, primal beats, over-the-top, chanted vocals, and a bad-boy/party-hardy attitude that bypasses gangta cool in search of a pure visceral, hedonist high. Accordingly, there's little subtlety to be found on KINGS OF CRUNK, and rightfully so. Would you really want to hear a tender love ballad from leather-lunged badass Lil Jon? Wisely, Jon and his Boyz stick to their strengths, to such an extent that the weak of heart should have a physician on hand when listening to KINGS OF CRUNK, just in case they should be overcome by the sheer ...
| | T I Trap Muzik CD (2003)
Certified Crunk CD music
$10.29 On the remarkably vulnerable "I Can't Quit," the second track on his sophomore release, TRAP MUZIK, T.I. observes "I'm this close to being a star and just this close to quitting." His 2001 debut, I'M SERIOUS, seemed a powerful can't-miss record with a title single featuring an ace turn by Beenie Man. While it didn't wholly miss, the single which should have been pumpin' around the world barely saw a lick of airplay, and while the album sold modestly, it didn't even approach the platinum level lesser talents achieved with ease.
No matter though, T.I.'s back with a vengeance on TRAP MUZIK, an appealing melange of subtle beats and easy flows which belie the Georgia rapper's vast lyrical intellect. While there are aspects of the Dirty South in T.I.'s style, his world and his style are distinctly his own--incredibly unself-conscious but confident, observational, insightful, rough, and raw. This odd mix is best represented in the starkly honest "Doin' My Job," a cry for ...

| | G-Unit Beg For Mercy CD (2003)
Certified Crunk songs
$11.15 Queens rapper 50 Cent ascended to the pinnacle of the hip-hop world in 2003, and the latter part of the year saw his crew, G-Unit, drop by with their own ubiquitous single "Stunt 101" and debut record, BEG FOR MERCY. Far from an entourage cashing in on one member's immediate success, the success of both 50 Cent and G-Unit is more of a chicken-and-egg situation. Since 1999, G-Unit's mixtape moments have been among the most sought after on the streets, helping to pump up 50 Cent's status until he exploded onto the mainstream.
Unsurprisingly, BEG FOR MERCY delivers a blistering attack of street rap that survives on its own merits. While 50 Cent opens the show on "Poppin' Them Thangs," he quickly blends into the mix, as G-Unit features two other more-than-able lyricists equal to the task and well-versed in trading off with the wildly talented 50. Lloyd Banks brings an arrogant strut that plays off Buck's subtle yet angry drawl. Together and separately, they both play off 50's familiar laid back style. The most intriguing moment on BEG FOR MERCY is the torn "Footprints," ...
| | Lil' Jon Part II CD (2003) Bonus DVD
Certified Crunk album
$8.49 Contains a bonus DVD which features the videos plus behind the scenes with Kings Of Crunk.
With his sudden rise to hip-hop royalty with the high-crunk-content breakout single "Get Low," it's easy to forget Lil Jon had been on the scene for over a decade as an artist, DJ, and record executive. He's been purveying his unmistakable growl and raw rap style (somewhere between Three 6 Mafia and 2 Live Crew) for years with his East Side Boys on both disc and at clubs, and as such there's tons of leftover music lying around. Rather than sit back while others distort his vision, he's taken charge and released a remix follow-up to the platinum-certified smash KINGS OF CRUNK, titled PART II.
PART II leads off with a standard but frantically sweet remix of "Get Low" that twists into a battle of the growls, as both Busta Rhymes and Elephant Man drop ...
