Osi Lewin is an Israeli-born singer with a wide-ranging interest in music and foreign languages, all of which serve her well in her debut CD, which features the support of a solid rhythm section. She sings a hard bop classic, "Whisper Not," with authority and a touch of playfulness, while slipping as comfortably into the cool swinger "Lullaby of Birdland." She easily switches back and forth between Portuguese and English lyrics to bossa nova gems by Antonio Carlos Jobim such as "Chega de Saudada (No More Blues)" and "Chovendo Na Roseira (Double Rainbow)," while throwing in a snatch of Ravel's Bolero into the latter for fun. Producer Ray Passman, a noted lyricist himself, co-wrote "Elis Regina" with Meredith d'Ambrosio as a tribute to the late Brazilian singer Elis Regina; Osi's interpretation perfectly captures its essence. About the only disappointing track is Charles Aznavour's overly bland
"Rien de Rien (No Regrets)," which comes across too mechanical to belong on what is essentially a brilliant jazz debut. ~ Ken Dryden
Recorded at The Studio, New York, New York in August 2002.
Personnel: Osi Lewin (vocals); Joe Vincent Tranchina (piano); Marty Confurious, Emmanuel Mann (bass); Benny Koonyevsky (drums, percussion).

Whisper Not album
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, ...

Whisper Not music CDs
$15.15 The follow-up to the Lightning Seeds' well-received debut, CLOUDCUCKOOLAND, 1992's SENSE found British singer/multi-instrumentalist/producer Ian Broudie continuing in his signature keyboard-driven twee-pop mode. While a few tracks were co-penned by the Specials' Terry Hall, most notably the vibrant title single, SENSE's standout track was "The Life of Riley," a jangly, upbeat ode to childhood.
This album spawned a couple of the well known songs that are still enjoyed today. Ian Broudie collaborated with Terry Hall on this album to produce some real classic ...
| | Briggan Krauss Good Kitty CD (1997)
Whisper Not songs
$14.59 Krauss-alto sax, Chris Speed-tenor sax & clarinet and Michael Sarin-drums perform twelve collective improvisations, composers credit on all to Krauss. It's a free wheeling, avant extravaganza with occasional melodic signposts, ethnic inferences and loaded with tangential interplay from these bad cats. At their most rhythmically centered is "MSSM," a dense funk with a well defined melody line displaying true collective improvisation. More circus like is "Inky Stinky" ...
| | Rosemary Clooney Date With The King/On Stage/Tenderly CD (2002)
Whisper Not album
$12.95 This discount-priced reissue CD combines the contents of three 10" LPs associated with Rosemary Clooney and originally released by Columbia Records in 1955 and 1956. Ten-inch LPs usually contained eight songs, but these three only contained six each, for a total of 18 tracks in about 57 and a half minutes. The three present different sides of Clooney. Date With the King (tracks 1-6) isn't really a Rosemary Clooney solo collection; it's a Benny Goodman album on which Clooney sits in for three numbers. Goodman wanted to record Cole Porter's clever "It's Bad for Me" in 1955, and Columbia insisted that Clooney join in for added commercial appeal; she and Goodman share vocal duties on the song. Then the label wanted an album in addition to the single, so Goodman obliged with some sextet numbers and even let Clooney sing on "Memories of You" (with only a trio) and "Goodbye." The result is a nice little jazz set. Tracks 7-12 made up On Stage, supposedly a Clooney ...
| | Rolas De Aztlan: Songs Of The Chicano Movement CD (2005)
Whisper Not CD music
$13.25 This important collection of folk songs from the Chicano movement, which began in the Southwest in the mid-'60s and continues today, covers 30 years of history. The heulga (strike) songs, moviemento (anthems), and the corridos (narrative songs of heroism and valor) come out of many forms including the conjunto sounds of the Texas-Mexico border. None of these tunes were recorded for commercial or critical purposes but rather as documents of struggle and inspiration. Most of the music here is on the raw side, immediate and gripping. A listen to the anthem "Yo Soy Chicano" from 1973 (which is described in the liner notes as the anthem of identity for the Chicano movement) is deeply moving and immediate. The lyrics attributed to Juanita Dominguez were written to the corridor "la Lreilera." (Many of the huelga songs were adaptations of other well-known corridos and rancheras.) There are surprises here, too, including "De Colores," ...
| | Siqsteen Barz Vol. 1.6-Undaground Pro CD (2005)
Whisper Not music CDs
$5.99 Siqsteen Barz is an independent artist out of Los Angeles who is now furthering his educational career by staying in school and remaining positive. Starting out as a young emcee with no concrete foundation for music, Siqsteen always had the drive to strive for excellence with his music. Growing up in a single parent home only made things harder for Siqsteen but the reality of a dead-beat dad/absent father pushed him to attain things only dreamed about by his father. Never settling for less, he pioneered a Los Angeles hip-hop crew of 8 elite emcees whom he would be the leader and head producer. His production was very low scale being that expensive equipment was in no way accessible to him. This did not stop Siqsteen though. By studying classic producers such as Dr. Dre, Timbaland, and N.E.R.D., Siqsteen was able ...
