The press release for the third album by Fred Szymanski's alter-ego Laminar, 2003's Nozzle, contains the following description: "Nozzle's starting point is the investigation of non-standard synthesis routines for creating music. As a whole, Nozzle is based on iterative functional synthesis and asynchronous granular synthesis, which involves developing musical structures by manipulating interactions at the sound-particle level." Got that? In plain English, this basically means that rather like his obvious hero, 20th century Greek composer Iannis Xenakis, Szymanski doesn't compose music in the traditional sense so much as write complex mathematical formulas and programs, then assigns them musical values. The pieces on Nozzle are the result: amelodic electronic soundscapes of whirs, clicks, clanking, and static. Szymanski does a better than average job of varying sound and mood in these seven lengthy pieces in comparison to many of his contemporaries, and it's an intriguing example of contemporary process music for those interested in such things, but listening to Nozzle, it's hard to think of anything here that Xenakis hadn't done a half-century previous. ~ Stewart Mason Nozzle Review

Nozzle album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern ...

Jay Hardwig...Smokey Mountain News"The Carter Brothers know no fear. Tim and Danny take no prisoners, accept no excuses and staunchly insist on doing it their way. Thumbing their noses at convention, laughing maniacally in the face of the collective 'wisdom' of the music establishment, this intrepid and dynamic duo moves incessantly forward with reckless abandon...forging, refining and perfecting their own instantly recognizable, unforgettable and compelling sound. In a world rife with gifted musicians, Tim and Danny not only stand alone, but manage to raise the bar for everyone in the process." It was, most certainly a labor of love for Tim and myself...to have it so richly rewarded and accepted by our heroes, peers and fans is a special gift that we will always remember."Cracks In the Floor", I think, follows the same path with perhaps a bit more focus. It was 1 ½ years in the making here in our own "TreeHouse Studio" outside of Nashville. I learned a few thing about myself and others during this experience...many years ...
| | Explorations: Classic Picante Regrooved Vol. 1 CD (2006)
Nozzle songs
$9.79 All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
If the point of a remix is to make something new out of something old, then Explorations: Classic Picante Regrooved surely succeeds. Here are archetypal Latin jazz sides by such giants as Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Mongo Santamaria, and Cal Tjader put through the remix grinder by hot-button contemporary DJs, producers, and bands, including Thievery Corporation, Ozomatli, Dan the Automator, Los Amigos Invisibles, and Yerba Buena. In several instances, such as Thievery Corporation's remix of Barretto's "Work Song," only trace elements of the source recording are audible, yet the funky, bass-piloted dancefloor pulse that rolls over those elements casts the revision as an innovative, stand-alone entity that doesn't borrow so much as pay homage. Whether reconsidered as a chillout groove or a fiery, pounding assault, the re-creations -- some with new vocals added -- profess reverence for and make reference to the masters, but stop short of bowing down at their altars. If, however, the job of the remixer is to improve upon the original concept, then these studio technicians have sadly ...
| | Fuzzy-Felt Folk CD (2006)
Nozzle album
$19.79 The wonderful U.K.-based archival label Trunk Records, which also released the similarly bizarre yet familiar-feeling collection of '60s and '70s advertising music Music for Biscuits, gives the same loving collector's treatment to children's music of that era with Fuzzy-Felt Folk. Fuzzy-Felt is a British toy series of felt cutouts that can be used to make pictures (basically, the fabric equivalent of Colorforms). The album's artwork comes from the 1968 set Fuzzy-Felt Fantasy, and really says it all about the music inside: it's undeniably cute, even cuddly, but with a whimsy that can become spooky at a moment's notice. Like all of Trunk's compilations, Fuzzy-Felt Folk's appeal goes way beyond its (considerable) nostalgia value -- this innocently trippy music sounds fresh, perhaps because of its very strangeness. Many of the tracks here are incredibly rare, and while every song is delightful, the middle stretch of Fuzzy-Felt Folk really captures what makes its psychedelic folk for kids so special. "Cuckoo" is one of several songs on the collection by the Barbara Moore Singers, all of which were created with children's movement classes in mind. Its lilting clarinets and flutes and cheery vocal harmonies were made for skipping, swaying to and fro, or maybe a very orchestrated game of hide-and-seek. "Spin Spider Spin" by Peggy Zeitlin (one of a handful of American artists on the collection) is a simple but memorable singalong that's more purely folk, offering a slightly moodier take on the acoustic-based ...
