Digitally remastered by Bill Lacey (Digital Sound & Picture, New York, New York). Personnel: Sam Cooke (vocals). Liner Note Author: Peter Guralnick. Saddled with soaring strings and vocal choruses for maximum crossover potential, Sam Cooke's solo material often masked the most important part of his genius -- his glorious voice -- so the odd small-group date earns a special recommendation in his discography. Thankfully, Cooke's voice took center stage on this admirably low-key session from February 1963, recorded in Los Angeles with a quartet of studio veterans. Unlike so many session crews and producers of the time, these musicians gave him plenty of space and often simply framed Cooke's breathtaking vocals. (On one of the best tracks here, "Lost and Lookin'," he's barely accompanied at all; only bass and cymbals can be heard far in the background.) The results are wonderful -- except for his early Soul Stirrers sides, Night Beat is the best place to marvel at one of the two or three best voices of the century. The songs are intimate blues, most taken at the pace of a late-night stroll, but despite the dark shading and heart-rending tempos, Cooke's voice is so transcendent it's difficult to become depressed while listening. Cooke also wrote three of the songs, including the excellent "Mean Old World," and rendered the traditional "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen" practically unfamiliar with his own re-arrangement. Cooke also stretches out on a pair of jump blues classics, "Little Red Rooster" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll," summoning some honest grit for the former and putting the uptown swing into the latter. He also allows some solo space, from Barney Kessel's simple, unadorned solo on "Get Yourself Another Fool" to Billy Preston's playful organ vocalizing on "Little Red Rooster." If Sam Cooke had lived longer, there would've been several more sessions like this, but Night Beat is an even richer treasure for its rarity. ~ John Bush By 1963 Cooke was a big enough star to call his own shots in the studio, and NIGHT BEAT is the result of his desire to make an intimate, artistic album that abandoned pop arrangements in favor of intimate soul-jazz settings. Accompanied by a small band that includes drum legend Hal Blaine and a very young Billy Preston on organ, he tackles a batch of tunes that were close to his heart. From the mournful, set-'em-up-Joe feel of "Lost And Lookin'" to the randy blues of Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster," Cooke pours out his heart. Freed from pop strictures, Cooke allows himself to stretch out vocally, his singing at its most unfettered and emotional throughout NIGHT BEAT. Sam Cooke is best known as the man who integrated R&B, gospel, and pop, amid expansive arrangements typified by big string sections and a maximalist production approach. It may be a surprise for casual Cooke listeners, then, to encounter the Sam Cooke of NIGHT BEAT. There's nary an orchestra to be found here; Cooke is backed by a small combo in a spare, tasteful manner. The overall musical feeling is also far removed from Cooke's poppier efforts, leaning strongly toward the jazzy blues end of the spectrum (as brilliantly accentuated by, among others, a

| | Bossa N' Stones V.1 & 2 CD (2006) (Import) Limited Edition
Journey Of Love
$18.39 This double-disc set issued by Music Brokers is partially what it says it is: bossa nova versions of Rolling Stones tunes. Even as a novelty this is stretching it -- why would any real bossa artist want to cover the Rolling Stones? In any case, a slew of minor bossa acts did sign up, and came up with some interesting versions of Stones cuts. Examples of these are Karen Souza's "Wild Horses," the Amazonics' "Let's Spend the Night Together," Anakelly's "Under My Thumb," and Urban Love's "Beast of Burden." There's also a ton of electronica here, and some of it is big booty bass like the Favela remix of "The Harlem Shuffle" by Marvin or Dual Sessions' dubby remix of "Ruby Tuesday." Unfortunately, most of the cuts here are like these last two, and have little to nothing to do with bossa. It's a come on. Ultimately, this set is for novelty freaks only. ~ Thom Jurek
Australian two CD set compiles both volumes of this popular series. Volume One is the compilation that started the Bossa Nova covers boom! Bossa N' Stones is an Electronic-tinged Bossa Nova treatment of Rolling Stones classics. They have assembled musicians and producers of different latitudes, who accepted the challenge of mixing the music of the legendary Rolling Stones, with the spirit of the Bossa Nova and contemporary electronics. Selections include classics such as 'Start Me Up', 'Satisfaction', 'Let's Spend The Night Together', 'Brown Sugar', a brilliant 'Sympathy For The Devil' and 'Angie'. After the success of the first volume (which has already gone platinum), Volume Two presents early hits like 'I'm Free', 'As Tears Go By' and 'Paint It, Black', as well as the major '70s numbers like 'Tumbling Dice', 'It's Only Rock N' Roll' and 'Emotional Rescue'. The album reaches forward into the '80s with 'Mixed Emotions', one of the highlights of the disc. 2007.
