When a guy has more than 100 albums, it's difficult to boil those down to a representative sampling in a mere one-disc compilation, even if that compilation packs in 74 minutes of music, as A Sufi Supreme does. On the other hand, when a guy has more than 100 albums, you can forgiven for feeling at a loss as to where to start. A Sufi Supreme seems like a reasonable point of entry, though it could be more confidently recommended if the compilers had gone to the trouble of including recording or release dates with the tracks. Even lengthy online Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan discographies, after all, don't list many of the albums from which these tracks were selected, and even the world music aficionado might not be able to tell you what range of his work this nine-track CD covers. However, it can be confidently confirmed that this does have selections from no less than eight different albums, encompassing a fair range of his qawwali music, from tracks using some modern electronic accompaniment ("Pyar Ka Diya Jalta Rahe," the dub-influenced "Jhoole Jhoole Lal (Talba Mix)") and rather light and poppy tunes ("Ag Ishq Di (Bossa Mix)") to more traditional arrangements with a devout tone ("Alif Allah Chambe Dee Booti," which lasts 14 minutes despite being an "edit"). There's also a duet with Humaira Channa, taken from the soundtrack to Bandit Queen, which is also the source of the too-brief closer "Funeral Pyres," a hauntingly sung a cappella piece. ~ Richie Unterberger

Sufi Supreme
$8.59 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', Porcupine Tree are unquestionably one of the UK's most inspired and inventive rock groups. In Absentia is their eagerly anticipated Lava Records debut. Digipak. 2002.
Recorded at Avatar Studio, New York, New York between March & April 2002.
Porcupine Tree: Richard Barbieri, Colin Edwin, Gavin Harrison, Steven Wilson.
Personnel: John Wesley (guitar, background vocals); Julian Leaper, Perry Mason, Warren Zielinski, Mark Berrow, Katherine Shave, Dave ...

$17.15 Singer/composer Michael Gira's 1980s band Swans, with their considerable darkness/bleakness quotient, were perhaps the only outfit that could make Joy Division and Leonard Cohen sound practically jolly. Gira's Angels of Light project, however, is another matter entirely. While the Angels' music is still somewhat grim in lyrical content and vocal timbre, the overwhelmingly intense Swans-like approach has largely given way to a bittersweet melodic presentation. The autumnal, reflective tone is enhanced by Gira's neo-folk proteges Akron/Family, who serve as the backing band.
The title THE ANGELS OF LIGHT SING "OTHER PEOPLE" refers not to other songwriters, but rather songs about particular people who've inspired/affected Gira in one way or another. He must know some fascinating characters: "Michael's White Hands" is a tapestry of buzzing, jangling string instruments conveying a chant/rant about a disorienting parallel world, the likes of which the Doors' Jim Morrison used to visit. "To Live Through Someone" has a catchy lilt that recalls British Isles' folk music, and the sweetly sung background vocals provide a welcome contrast ...

$11.29 Don't Get Comfortable was, contrary to its title, one of the smoothest, easiest-to-go-down helpings of smart, contemporary Christian pop to surface in 2006. The album was a strong showing for Brandon Heath, who signed to the heavyweight Reunion Records roster (home to Casting Crowns and Michael W. Smith, among others). The native Nashville singer exhibited a host of skills honed after years of collaborating within the CCM songwriting community. Heath rose from the songwriting ...
