Parental Advisory. From The Blue Collar Comedy Tour.
Recorded at Laff Stop, Houston, Texas. Audio Mixer: Donivan Cowart. Recording information: Laff Stop, Houston, TX. Editor: Donivan Cowart. Photographer: Pete Tangen. Ron White made his hay as a member of "The Blue Collar Comedy Tour," alongside fellow sons of the South Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, and Larry the Cable Guy. The show played to sold-out audiences in over 90 cities, with appearances on LATE NIGHT WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, Comedy Central, and CAROLINE'S COMEDY HOUR, where White crafted his self-deprecating comedic chops to a razor's edge. His debut album DRUNK IN PUBLIC is a hilarious delight. Unlike Foxworthy and Engvall, White eschews song parodies and instead goes straight to observational humor. With the sound of ice clinking in his glass of booze, raspy-voiced White rails against vegetarians and Hollywood fakes ("Ten Days In Los Angeles"), the problems with marrying into a rich family ("Married a Wealthy Woman"), and the pretentious in-laws that come with it ("Lug Nut Day"). White wraps up this tight package of laughs with "They Call Me 'Tater Salad'," a story that cleverly explains his unusual nickname and the title DRUNK IN PUBLIC. Drunk In Public
$13.19 Ron White made a name for himself as a member of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, and he makes good on that name with his full-length solo outing YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID. Foul-mouthed, scathingly sarcastic, and surprisingly insightful, White holds forth on everything from the Mile High Club to Michael Jackson in his inimitable red-neck-meets-rat-pack style. Those with tender ears will want to steer clear, but comedy fans with a penchant for bawdy straight-shooting will get a kick out of YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID. A payoff from his role in the Blue Comedy Tour's success, the audience Ron White plays to on You Can't Fix Stupid is huge. The comedian, however, hasn't changed a bit. He's still that rare rambler at the end of the bar who's entertaining while shooting his mouth off at the modern world and getting scatological whenever possible. The laziness White projects has been supported by a slow release schedule that includes his appearances on the Blue Collar albums, 2003's Drunk in Public, a couple DVDs, and a bunch of shoddy reissues of his early truck stop albums that really don't match his later work. It's admirable that White hasn't exploited the Blue Collar breakthrough like his old record company, but the big payoff of this restraint is You Can't Fix Stupid sounds road-tested to perfection despite White's informal delivery. Sleaze and swearing are abundant and all the explanation you need as to why raunchy man was the only member of the troupe to sit out the too-safe Blue Collar TV series. The brash brute's ...

Trick Pony was doing rough and rowdy long before Gretchen Wilson came along and flew the flag for redneck women, but their third album (and first for Curb), R.I.D.E., proves that the trio sounds rougher and rowdier than Wilson. Trick Pony are a quintessential Southern bar band, nominally country but just as comfortable with rock & roll and blues. They'll also throw a little pop in the mix -- as in "When I Fall," a bid for a crossover hit -- but they're better off when they relax and kick out music that's the ideal soundtrack for a weekend. Heidi Newfield has a sexy, throaty growl that adds grit even to the slower songs and she's complimented by Keith Burns' clean swagger, and the combination of two lead vocalists helps give R.I.D.E. a welcome sense of variety. Sometimes, the trio can get a little silly and sometimes their material leans a little bit too close to the generic, but for the most part this is a lean, mean redneck country-rock album, one that promises and delivers a damn ...
