Additional personnel includes: Robert Smith (vocals); Ken Andrews (various instruments); Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., Jon Morrical (keyboards).
In the world of emo and pop-punk, 2003 not only found Blink 182 qualifying for the early bird special, but the creators of a self-titled outing that represents a big step in musical maturity for a band best known for serial nudity and a jokey, skate-punk attitude. Rest assured, this trio hasn't lost its taste for serious riffing and catchy-as-all-get-out harmonies, as evidenced by the thumping "Go," the jittery "Stockholm Syndrome," and the anthemic "Easy Target."
For the most part, however, Blink 182 has cast a wide net in tweaking their sound, be it the stripped-down combination of Tom DeLonge's surf guitar and the finger snaps that define "Violence" or the tight shuffle drummer Travis Barker employs throughout "I Miss You." A singing and songwriting cameo by the Cure's Robert Smith on "All of This" makes for a strange surprise, but given the more serious approach taken by the Blink boys on this go-round, the moody ambiance finds Smith's appearance fitting hand in glove. Just when it would have been easy to write Blink 182 off a yesterday's news, the trio proves that there is musical life for thirtysomething punk rockers.
Blink 182: Tom DeLonge (vocals, guitar); Mark Hoppus (vocals, bass); Travis Landon Barker (drums).

Blink-182
$24.39 Considered one of the most popular musicals of all time, WEST SIDE STORY earned director Robert Wise an Oscar for Best Director as well as nine other Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Realistically portrayed characters and their surroundings and expert editing complementing innovative dance sequences mark this highly stylized modern-day Romeo and Juliet tale. The stage is set in New York's Upper West Side in the 1950s, where the area's slums are plagued by racial tensions acted on by two rival gangs: the Puerto Rican Sharks and the Caucasian Jets. In the middle of this mess is young, innocent Maria (Natalie Wood), a Puerto Rican seamstress whose brother, Bernardo (George Chakiris), is the leader of the Sharks. Despite the warnings of Anita (Rita Moreno), Bernardo's fiery girlfriend, Maria falls in love with a young, hopeful Polish boy, Tony (Richard Beymer), who ...
| | Evanescence Fallen CD (2003)
Blink-182
$8.99 Evanescence won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. FALLEN was nominated for Album Of The Year and for Best Rock Album. "Bring Me To Life" won for Best Hard Rock Performance. The song was also nominated for Best Rock Song.
Picture Tori Amos fronting Nickelback and you'll get an idea of the sound behind Evanescence, an Arkansas quartet whose introduction to the world came via the DAREDEVIL soundtrack. With its debut FALLEN, Evanescence further pushes the envelope on the aforementioned description, with frontwoman Amy Lee pouring her light-yet-strong vocals into the aggro-rock workout "Bring Me to Life" and industrial trip-hop of "My Last Breath." Although guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt leave no riff unplayed on hard-hitting cuts like "Going Under" and "Taking Over Me," Lee brings a nice balance to the table with her gorgeous piano runs, which come to the fore on the very Amos-like "Hello." The perfect balance of hard and soft is met on "Haunted" with its ambient nuance stoked by clattering beats and loops, crunching riffs, and the use of a children's choir. Goth-like in mood yet nu-metal in execution, FALLEN could very well have been where Amos' first group Y Kant Tori Read ended up had they not come along 15 years too soon.
Personnel: Amy Lee (vocals); David Hodges (piano, keyboards, programming); Josh Freese (drums); Chris Johnson , Zac Baird (programming).

| | Stephen Malkmus Pig Lib CD (2003)
Blink-182
$10.39 Initial pressings of PIG LIB included a bonus CD including five tracks.
Principally recorded at Bear Creek Studios, Woodinville, Washington between May & August 2002.
For his second solo outing after leaving Pavement, Stephen Malkmus expands his musical horizons a bit from his 2001 solo debut, which basically sounded like an extension of his former band's sound. It's only naturally that Malkmus' work should bear some similarities with the output of his erstwhile group, since he played a major role in fashioning their style, and the non-sequitir lyricism and skewed, angular alt-rock that marked the Pavement style are still strongly in evidence. However, there are other elements at work on PIG LIB.
Mostly, it sounds like noted music geek Malkmus has been listening to esoteric '70s UK outfits like progressive blues-rockers the Groundhogs and folk-rock cult heroes Steeleye Span (or perhaps Fairport Convention). The knotty, stately guitar lines that twist their way around many of the songs and intertwine with the vocal melodies are redolent of the beard-rock world inhabited by folks like the aforementioned groups. The sound makes a nice fit for the former lo-fi king, providing a refreshing change of pace that's subtle enough not to seem drastic or crass, but substantial enough to suggest that Malkmus's musical growth was not stunted ...
| | Godsmack Faceless CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Blink-182
$11.99 "Straight Out Of Line" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
Godsmack first came to fame with a seamless blend of Metallica-like vocals and hooks and seemingly Tool-inspired prog-metal sensibilities all combined into an unrelentingly aggressive sonic attack. FACELESS continues in that tradition, delivering blow after aural blow via hellfire guitar riffs, devil's-anvil drums, and a gut-wrenching sense of dynamics. As implied above, singer Sully Erna alternates handily between James Hetfield-style lion growl and more vulnerable Maynard James Keenan tones, singing of all that's gone wrong both in himself and in the world that surrounds him, while the rest of the band does a fine job of representing the mayhem of modern society.
Unlike many other nu-metal types, Godsmack doesn't feel the need to leaven their attack with crossover-potential ballads and orchestral/electronic interludes. FACELESS provides one breathless bash after another without fail, never giving an inch until the very end, when the percussion-and-chanting strains of "The Awakening" give way to the largely acoustic, rather Alice ...
| | Lisa Marie Presley To Whom It May Concern CD (2003)
Blink-182
$13.95 Bearing the brunt of being Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie Presley wisely chose to sit back and experience life before emerging with her full-length debut album TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN. The results are surprisingly good, thanks to Presley's decision to sidestep becoming some prefabricated pop mannequin and instead take the creative reigns by penning all the lyrics, save the lament "The Road Between." Most of the record is steeped in dark imagery that goes well with her smoky phrasing and finds her serving up autobiographical tidbits like "Someone turned the lights out there in Memphis/That's where my family's buried and gone" from the mid-tempo rock of "Lights Out." A slow-burn vitriol that could be construed as being directed at former spouse Michael Jackson bubbles up throughout the simmering "Important," and will surely have amateur biographers cocking their ears. Lisa Marie avoids making this musical outing one solely steeped in bitterness by including "So Lovely," a sweet ode to her children that's laced with crying guitar and a snatch ...
