Taking this album's title quite literally, Dolly Parton takes a sharp right from her previous few albums of progressive bluegrass. In the wake of the Iraq war, Parton wanted to record a tribute to the soldiers fighting for America. Ironically, after recently recording countrified versions of songs like "Stairway to Heaven," Parton delivers these patriotic songs in a completely straightforward fashion. Other than the inherent twang of her pristine voice, there's little country flavor added to the arrangements here. The like of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "The Star Spangled Banner" are delivered in a traditional, militaristic manner. The flag-wavers that fell from Parton's own pen, however, can't help but display the country legend's musical roots, and it's these that are the ultimate standouts.

very patriotic I not even an american, but yet after listening to this album i felt proud to be allied with america. Dolly has put alot of work in this album to encourage and inspire the men & women who are fighting and taking a stand for freedom and democracy in these trouble times. God bless america and God bless you dolly for producing such a wonderful album. Submitted by melwilson (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Disappointing effort... Dolly Parton, along with colleague and Trio member Emmylou Harris, must be commended for constantly taking risks with her music. There is no greater Dolly Parton fan than this reviewer. However, this cd is pretentious, annoying, and patronizing; and much as I LOVE Dolly, there is entirely too much spoken word on this cd.
Granted the cd has it's moments but they are brief and fleeting. "Welcome Home" is one of the most moving and inspirational songs of Dolly's illustrious career but the banter on this cd becomes grating like nails on a chalk board, and it's also patronizing to the listener.
Her releases before and the ones to follow are exceptional and worth seeking but this one is better left on the shelf. If you want to hear Dolly do gospel, seek her early 70s gospel effort, which is very centered and moving--I apologize the title escapes me now--but this one, you're not missing a thing. Best Patriotic/Gospel Album of 2003! This album is diffently one that all Americans should own. Dolly offers up her own blend of patriotic and gospel songs meant to be messages of hope and faith to our troops and the USA. Some of the songs in this collection are country, while others offer the acoustic flavor of Dolly's previous three albums. Give it a try and I'll bet you will not be disappointed! on the bandwagon Considering the thought-provoking music we are accustomed to getting from Parton, this collection of so-called "patriotic" does nothing to make the listener any more (or less) critically aware of what it means to be an American in the 21st century. The songs--even the ones that are not remakes--offer nothing new by way of interpretation. Submitted by a reviewer (tacoma, wa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
