Audio Mixer: Greg Townley. Editor: Shannon Halwes. Unknown Contributor Role: Rose Corrigan. Composer Laura Karpman does her best to channel John Williams for the Steven Spielberg-produced television miniseries Taken. From the opening woodwind/celeste crescendo, she manages to evoke the fantastical whimsy that he employed throughout his sci-fi heydays. That's not to say that her own voice is muted by Williams' work; rather, it's shadowed and informed by it. She exhibits a light touch on the main theme that only occasionally touches on the descending piccolos and bursts of Vader-esque dissonance that propelled the Star Wars trilogy. The work's highlight is the shimmering "Mothership Arrival," a fresh and exhilarating piece of ear candy that tosses a wonderful brass motif in circles before deflating into a lush field of chords. Unfortunately, the score as a whole never takes off. Karpman misses the opportunity to establish a real voice by opting for long forgettable soundscapes instead of evolving the opening theme into a memorable creation. ~ James Christopher Monger Composer Laura Karpman does her best to channel John Williams for the Steven Spielberg-produced television miniseries Taken. $9.75 Within a year's time, RBD followed up the blockbuster success of their debut album, Rebelde, with a new studio album, Nuestro Amor. (In the meantime, they'd already recorded and released a live CD/DVD, Tour Generación RBD en Vivo.) It was rather amazing how quickly RBD were able to record a second studio album, since throughout the year they were busy touring and filming their telenovela. Evidently it helps when others write the songs and play the music, leaving only the singing for RBD. The kids worked with a lot of different songwriters for this album, unlike Rebelde, which had been written ...

$20.25 Liner copy for “Alone Together”Don’t look for that bittersweet ballad, “Alone Together,” anywhere on this album. But you will find the concept of working alone and together pervading the entire CD. As with their live appearances and club dates, a fairly consistent pattern emerges as Lance solos, then Stephanie sings a tune by herself, followed by a duet. This, they assure me, is “show biz.” Well, duh! I was convinced that every set was strictly random, each singer, or both, miraculously materializing at the right mike at the right time.Actually, randomness plays a key element in the suuccess of the Buller/Porter show. As they assured me, the term is “ad lbbing” (don’t you just love all this technical talk?) and each of them is such a devout ad-libber, the bottom line is: they swing reliigously. Neither one knows what the other will do or say at any given time. Fans of Buller and Porter never hear the same thing twice. They are so dedicated to spontaneity It keeps Lance and Steph on their respective toes, and keeps their admirers coming ...
