This seasonal effort by folk-rocker Jimmie F. Rodgers was first released in 1959 at the height of his North American popularity, which began after several appearances on Arthur Godfrey's syndicated television show two years earlier. His performance of "Honeycomb" created such a fuss that Roulette Records brass Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore both auditioned and had Rodgers in a recording studio within 24 hours. By the time this platter hit store shelves for the 1959 holiday season, the vocalist had scored 11 Top 40 singles, and also had a half-hour weekly musical variety TV program on NBC. Noted pop arrangers Jim Tyler and Maury Laws were brought in to embellish the melodies and instrumentally enhance Rodgers' lead vocals. Although he had worked with orchestras and string sections before, this was somewhat contrary to the smaller combos that usually accompanied him. Likewise prominent are the overwhelming number of sacred -- as opposed to secular -- tunes included within the dozen sides. This too seems slightly out of character for an artist primarily (and quite well) known for his light and folksier fare. The exceptions being the cozy and intimate cover of Mel Tormé's "Christmas Song" (aka "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire"), as well as Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" and the title track, "It's Christmas Once Again." Interestingly, the latter also created a minor stir for Rodgers' concurrent Roulette Records labelmates -- the doo wop-driven Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers. Although somewhat staid, on the whole, Rodgers' presentations are both tremendously heartfelt and sincere. The strength and timbre of his intonations reveal that he could have easily been a successful crooner à la Tony Bennett or Steve Lawrence. The music in this collection has been repackaged under several titles, most notably Christmas With Jimmie Rodgers (1972). In 2003, Collectors' Choice Music issued It's Christmas Once Again on CD for the very first time, commencing a much needed catalog restoration of Rodgers. ~ Lindsay Planer
This 1959 stereo album brings his trademark blend of folk and pop to such hallowed holiday fare as 'O Holy Night' & 'The First Noel'. 12 tracks. Collectors' Choice. 2003. It's Christmas Once Again songs
$12.15 It would be useless to attempt to find a form of narrative in Les Anecdotiques. Luc Ferrari's objective was to create a continuous piece that gave the impression of telling a story, yet consists only of several intermingling anecdotes -- thus the title, "The Anecdotals." The result is simply stunning. This hour-long sound collage borrows from electro-acoustics and phonography, blending recordings on location (although the locations indicated in the track titles are incomplete and occasionally misleading). The collage borrows, too, from abstract electronic sounds, and a series of conversations with women, recorded up close and woven throughout the work as another anecdotal strand parallel to the sonic one. Spoken material is in French, German, and English (in order of importance). Between the conversations and the puzzling treated field ...

| | Joan Baez Blessed Are... CDs (1971)
It's Christmas Once Again CD music
$13.79 Perhaps Joan Baez's best-known album, 1971's BLESSED ARE is a double-album-length example of Baez at the point where she was moving away from pure folk into a more pop-oriented sound. Featuring her hit cover of the Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," a version which outraged many Band fans because they felt Baez misinterpreted the lyrics, the record also includes several other country-tinged rock covers, including the Stones' "Salt of the Earth," the Beatles' "Let It Be" and Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night," alongside an impressive set of Baez folk-rock originals. "Fifteen Months" and the seven-minute ballad "Three Horses" are particular highlights. This remastered CD reissue includes a bonus CD single, "Plane Wreck At Los Gatos (Deportee)" and "Maria Dolores," two songs from a 7" which was included with early copies of the vinyl album.
Blessed Are... was arguably Joan Baez's greatest artistic triumph, the commercial and aesthetic high point of her career and certainly of her decade at Vanguard Records. It marked the moment when her political and social concerns meshed most easily and effectively with her artistic goals and -- totally unexpectedly -- even yielded a pair of huge hit singles ("The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Let It Be") that helped propel the original double LP to gold record status. [In contrast to the 1994-issued CD release of Blessed Are..., which suffered from flat sound and a fair amount of hiss, the expanded and remastered edition of the album finally lives up to the memory of hearing that album for the first time in the fall of 1971. Her soprano, crystalline in its clarity, floats ...

| | I Is For Ida CD (2007)
It's Christmas Once Again songs
$12.65 By Captain America (From Albuquerque's weekly Alibi 2/1/06)I is for Ida CD Release Party Immediate. Illusive. Inspiration.I is for Ida: Dancing on your grave. I is for Ida--the top-secret hush-hush side project of (shhhh!) Unit 7 Drain--takes the stage for the first time tonight in a two-for-one that promises to impress all around. That's something not often said about any single debut show or debut CD release. Unlike the suffocating mass of side projects infecting indie rock these days, little here will remind you of their incipient U7D nativity. Troupers all, the impavid Prue Fell (bass, vox), the insistent Quintin Mire (drums) and the incubus Victor Lye (synth) have invited their friends The Oktober People, Romeo Goes To Hell, Gingerbread Patriots and, uh, Unit 7 Drain to help celebrate their coming-out party in style and musical camaraderie. It's challenging to not wax poetic of the imagery that I is for Ida births: deepest indigo soundbeds like the hiss of snow falling on dry desert as individual flakes rise and collect, swirling into ghostly shapes. Is it dawn or dusk, cold or warm, intricate or simple, happy or sad? Yes.If this sounds like too much for a new three-piece to live up to, their self-titled release (free with admission!) will illuminate these words. Ida will cast a tepid glow over your winter idylls with their incandescence, like a lone long black candle in a puddle of its own melted wax, the flame made of all colors including some you may have never before seen.Glimpsed from the outside, one may be tempted to insert Ida into the goth slot, but that would be indelicate. The band does promote a certain graveyard aesthetic in their promotional illustrations but, as incorrupt ...
