As the girl who just wants to have fun, Cyndi Lauper became an '80s music icon with her flamboyant style, powerful baby-doll voice, and quirky songs, but as time and tastes moved on, her playful persona wore thin and attempts at becoming a more serious artist failed to regain her dwindling audience. With At Last, Lauper steps even further away from that playful image to become the girl who just wants to sing as she tackles a set of pop standards that showcase her underrated voice. Although occasionally shrill and reckless, Lauper's forceful tones can be quite moving and awe-inspiring when corralled into the proper setting, as with her bluesy take on Etta James' "At Last." With its lazy tempo and minimal arrangement, Lauper is able to relax and convey the lyrics in one of her most mature and affecting performances. Even more low-key is the whisper quiet of "Walk on By," in which she turns Dionne Warwick's midtempo gem into a dark tale of mourning by sadly singing the lyrics over a crawling tempo. Getting a Tori Amos-style ballad treatment is the Animals' "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," which lets Lauper's rock roots rise to the surface with her edgy performance. While some of her song choices work, others fall flat, like "La Vie en Rose," in which her slightly ragged reading is too rough for the delicate song. Also misfiring is her corny duet with Tony Bennett, "Makin' Whoopee," where the voices of these two New Yorkers clash like stripes and plaids. Lauper also has a little too much fun with Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs' "Stay," as she reverts back to her boisterous voice of yesteryear and disrupts the mature tone of the disc. Although the results are mixed, At Last does focus on Cyndi Lauper's best asset -- her voice -- and may help to rejuvenate a career in which the personality unfortunately overshadowed the talent. ~ Aaron Latham Beneath the kooky persona she has projected in the past, Cyndi Lauper is a nice New York City girl with quite a set of pipes. AT LASRolling Stone (12/25/03-1/8/04, p.123) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...This all-covers album spotlights Lauper the lounge chanteuese, alternately dignified and bombastic....Her version of Etta James' 'At Last' is a true revelation..." The Greatest I just got back from seeing her in concert here at the Greek Theatre...and I'm in love. This girl sounds absolutely amazing. She hits every note exactly the way it was done on her cd's which cannot be said about anyone else I've seen. It was unbelievable. She's cute, fun, and ofcourse, one of hte greatest singers of our generation. Submitted by Richard latogpandbackagain (Los Angeles) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

This Is Cyndi Lauper??? I love it when artists branch out and do uncharacteristic material, and I tensely awaited "zany" Cyndi Lauper's album of classics. For the most part, I am not disappointed. Her voice is in fine form, her phrasing is totally effective, and the emotion sounds genuine. In my favorite, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", she sings the line "...if I seem edgy...", and indeed she does. Even the cover art is beautiful. My one reservation is that in some songs ("At Last", "Walk On By", "You Really Got A Hold On Me"), the musical accompaniment is too bare. It begs for a little more drama. (Ironically, this technique works for "La Vie En Rose".) In "Unchained Melody", the production is a little heavier, and it is good. Other highlights: "If You Go Away" is utter desperation expressed in the simplest way, no pyrotechnics required. And Cyndi's duet with Tony Bennett, "Makin' Whoopee", is an old song about the pros and cons of marriage, but they make it a comment on modern marriage as well, with Cyndi reminding Tony, "It's 2003". The song "Stay" rocks, and the finale, "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", gives us a little bit of the young girl who just wanted to have fun. All in all, quality material sung by a real artist. Girl can really sing... Cyndi lays her powerful pipes on off-beat & dark versions of these chestnuts. Definitely a great way to keep these songs alive. Submitted by a reviewer (Columbia, SC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$11.35 On 2007's PERSONAL PITCH, Animal Collective's Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox) ambles out on his own once again with an album that includes a number of tracks from his 2005-07 singles and EPs. Influenced in part by married bliss, new fatherhood, and a move to Lisbon, Portugal, this bright, buoyant album was recorded largely with samplers, creating a highly textured sound that cements Lennox's status as the Brian Wilson of the freak-folk set. (In fact, his vocal similarities to Wilson are remarkable, as evinced on the percussive opener "Comfy in Nautica.") Anchoring the record are two extended tracks that each break the 12-minute mark--"Bros," a mesmerizing, echo-laden number that gives way to a toy-monkey-like beat and energetic acoustic-guitar strumming, and "Good Girls/Carrots," an electronics-oriented mini-suite. While Lennox's ambition here sometimes threatens to eclipse the proceedings, he lines the album with enough melodic twists and turns to keep things fascinating, resulting in a truly impressive collection that transcends its bedroom-recording origins. Starting an album with a clattering ...
