| | K C & The Sunshine Band 25th Anniversary Edition CDs (1999)
Idolo De Mexico songs
$16.19 In 1999, Rhino celebrated the 25th anniversary of KC & the Sunshine Band's formation with this two-CD anthology. But technically, 1999 was their 26th anniversary -- the soul/funk/disco band was formed in 1973, not 1974. For the casual listener and the budget-minded, a better and more concise choice would be Rhino's 1990 CD The Best of KC & the Sunshine Band, which summarizes their contributions with 16 tracks. But if your interest in KC goes beyond casual, 25th Anniversary Collection isn't a bad release to have. The set contains all of the essential '70s hits offered on The Best of KC & the Sunshine Band, including "Get Down Tonight," "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," "That's The Way (I Like It)," "I'm Your Boogie Man," and "Keep It Comin' Love," as well as "Wrap Your Arms Around Me," "I Like To Do It," and the ballad "Please Don't Go." But 25th Anniversary Collection also has its share of material that is enjoyable though less than essential -- you need to be a seasoned, diehard KC fanatic to fully appreciate the Spanish-language version of "Please Don't Go" (titled "Por Favor, No Te Vayas"), Tom Moulton's 1994 remix of "Get Down Tonight," or KC and Teri DeSario's 1980 cover of Martha & the Vandellas' "Dancin' in the Streets." And if you're that much of a collector, you'll appreciate Brian Chin's comprehensive, informative liner notes -- the writer has no problem articulating why KC's music was so popular in the '70s and why his classic grooves excited many hip-hop, dance-pop and house enthusiasts in ...

Idolo De Mexico music CDs
$17.95 Highlights from three previously released CDs were reissued for this single disc, all featuring the Hot Club de Norvège as the core group. The Hot Club, a quartet comprised of two guitars, bass, and a violinist who doubles on harmonica, has been one of Norway's top jazz groups since its formation in 1979. Although based in the Gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt, it does not merely re-create Reinhardt's earlier work but features many catchy originals from guitarist Jon Larsen, including the memorable "Femme Fatale." This program begins with seven numbers (four group pieces plus three brief solo guitar interludes that on a whole are known as "Jimmy's Suite") recorded in 1993 that showcase the remarkable guitarist Jimmy Rosenberg, who was just 13 at the time but already a brilliant player in the Django style. The next dozen numbers from 1995 match the Hot Club de Norvège with a flexible and swinging string quartet and guest Ulf Wakenius in top form as the guitar soloist. The final four selections have French guitarist Angel Debarre in the spotlight as the ...

| | Cannibal & The Headhunters Anthology CD (2005) (Import)
Idolo De Mexico CD music
$13.05 Cannibal and the Headhunters' style was molded on the soulful sounds of 60's Motown vocal groups, and their approach was absorbed by many Mexican American groups in East Los Angeles at the time, which shaped this community's own music scene, creating a style of its own known as the East Side Sound. In despite of the fabulous success of 'Land of 1000 Dances' Cannibal & The Headhunters were much more than a one-hit-wonder ...
| | Banda Jerez Me Gustan Las Viejas Buenas CD (2006)
Idolo De Mexico music CDs
$10.09 Certain adjectives have a way of coming up a lot when Banda Jerez is being described -- adjectives that have included, among many others, exuberant, funny, humorous, irreverent, fun, spirited, tireless and lively. All of those adjectives are applicable on this 2006 release, which underscores the fact that even though Jerez' members are well aware of regional Mexican music's rich past, they are not stuck in it. Me Gustan Las Viejas Buenas leaves no doubt that Jerez is well aware of the great ranchera and corrido contributions of previous generations of Mexican artists, and yet, this 34-minute CD is quite modern and contemporary sounding by 2006 standards. Of course, not all regional Mexican listeners are fans of Jerez' irreverent approach; Jerez have had their share of detractors who were critical of some of their more off-color lyrics. But folks who do appreciate where Jerez is coming from musically -- those who realize that art is not polite 100 percent of the time -- eat their albums up, and Me Gustan Las Viejas Buenas does not disappoint. The usual Jerez aggression is impossible to miss on colorful, hot-blooded tracks like "Tamarindo," "Corrido del Perico," "Tu Madre" and "Discúlpeme Amigo." ...
