BILL EVANS is a tribute to drummer Paul Motian's early 1960's employer, one that highlights Bill Evans--one of the most lyrical, impressionistic pianists in jazz history--as composer. Featuring guitarist Bill Frisell at his most straight-ahead, former Evans bassist Marc Johnson, and the hearty tenor sax of Joe Lovano, BILL EVANS is an affectionate but inventive homage. It's a brilliant, inspired, and subtly swinging collection.
Having been Bill Evans' drummer during the pianist's prime early-'60s period, Paul Motian is the right person to record an Evans tribute album, a recording that fits right in with Motian's spate of jazz repertory releases (Monk in Motian, the On Broadway series). But the obligatory nature of the record ends there, as Motian, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, guitarist Bill Frisell, and bassist Marc Johnson turn in an innovative set, using Evans' rich harmonic and rhythmic structures to launch many inspired solos. And being sensitive to Evans' subtle and intimate piano style, the group opts for a fairly straightforward tonal attack: Frisell forgoes his usual hyper-eclectic approach for some unadorned jazz soloing, while Lovano sticks to the middle register of his horn. For his part, Motian keeps the swing supple enough to be unobtrusive, while adding choice accents throughout. Highlights include the exquisite ballads "Turn Out the Stars" and "Very Early," a somewhat free-form reading of "Five," and the elegiac rendition of "Play Song." This is one of the best releases of the handful Motian has done with Lovano and Frisell, and certainly as fine a tribute record as there is. A good purchase for fans of both Bill Evans and Paul Motian. ~ Stephen Cook

Customer Bill Evans Reviews

Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars Excellent, enjoyable, fresh - perfect
This is another 5-star reissue from Paul Motian's work in the early 1990s. I missed them all when they first came out, and now I'm keenly waiting for each new reissue. On Broadway discs, the set of Monk tunes, and this set of Bill Evans' tunes, all amazing. Really. Joe Lovano and Bill Frisell play without worries of having to be deep ARTISTS and without having to lead, period. Motian has nothing to prove so he can enjoy himself and the results are magic. Since this disc is about Bill Evans' music, I should add that please check him out too - he was one the masters of jazz piano.

The core of Paul Motian's "On Broadway" band returns for this third offering, with bassist Charlie Haden and guitarist Bill Frisell holding down the fort this time and a pair of saxophonists on the front line in Lee Konitz and Joe Lovano. The approach of these records may be similar, but Motian is a supreme harmonist whose manner of hearing these nuggets suggests he is looking for something mercurial. Each of these versions, though completely recognizable, carries within it the hunt for the unexpected, the mysterious, the elliptical hidden trace of a crack ...

The sum total of the nuanced, elliptical lyricism at the heart of Paul Motian's compositional method can be heard in the opening seconds of "Osmosis Part III," the first track from I Have the Room Above Her. Recorded for ECM -- with producer Manfred Eicher, guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano -- this date is Motian's first as a leader for the label in more than 20 years. This is the same team that recorded the seminal album It Should've Happened a Long Time Ago in 1984. At that time, Lovano and Frisell were just beginning to establish themselves as bandleaders though they had ...

The follow-up to I HAVE THE ROOM ABOVE HER, Paul Motian's lauded collaboration with guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano, 2006's GARDEN OF EDEN finds the veteran jazz drummer leading a much larger ensemble through a remarkable set. This live tribute to drummer/bandleader Art Blakey bests pianist Cedar Walton's other homage to his old boss, The Art Blakey Legacy. Actually recorded on the same dates at The Sweet Basil in New York City, the two discs were released separately. In truth, they should be taken as companion pieces saluting the energetic drummer and his particular musical oeuvre. As far as sets go, the selections on Bambino are sharper, more polished, and contain more energy than the tracks on The Art Blakey Legacy. All of the soloing on both discs is stellar, but there is something more vibrant and awake about the playing on Bambino. The song selections flow better and reflect more of the mid-'60s style that Walton would have be familiar with during his time with Blakey. Ideally, these albums should be merged and released on one disc, but until that happens, Bambino is the set to get. ~ Matt Collar
