After a year filled with controversy, allegations, and investigations, Murder Inc label head Irv Gotti finished it on Ashanti's Christmas. Ashanti's voice fits sweet holiday music well, and multi-instrumentalist Demi "Doc" McGhee provides the accompaniment in total, seemingly emulating a whole orchestra with what sounds like a lone synthesizer. Ashanti contributes four new compositions with "Christmas Time Again" and "Sharing Christmas" being simple and sweet, although her "Hey Santa" reflects the season's materialistic side as she begs the big guy for a "baby blue convertible." ~ David Jeffries What a letdown. After a year filled with controversy, allegations, and investigations, Murder Inc label head Irv Gotti finished it on Ashanti's Christmas with his least slick and least satisfying production work. Ashanti's voice fits sweet holiday music well, and she could deliver an excellent Christmas album given the chance, but it seems Gotti can't be bothered to surround her with anything worthwhile. Multi-instrumentalist Demi "Doc" McGhee provides the accompaniment in total, and the poor guy has to emulate a whole orchestra with what sounds like a lone synthesizer. McGhee's piano is hollow and synthetic, and the arrangements are uninspired. Ashanti contributes four new compositions with "Christmas Time Again" and "Sharing Christmas" being simple and sweet, but her "Hey Santa" is a materialistic embarrassment that begs the big guy for a "baby blue convertible." A drum machine that chugs on and on before someone has the good sense to turn it off takes up the last 30 seconds of the 20-minute album. It's a perfectly lifeless moment that caps off a perfectly humdrum album. According to the rumors, relations between Ashanti and Murder Inc had gone sour. Ashanti's Christmas sounds like the standard contractual obligation getaway. ~ David Jeffries While Ashanti may be part of Irv Gotti's Murder, Inc. and famous for duets with tough guys like Ja Rule and Fat Joe, the silken-voiced singer's Christmases are clearly far from that world, as evidenced by ASHANTI'S CHRISTMAS. On her first holiday disc, Ashanti mixes up traditional tracks befitting her light-and-sweet manner and three new songs that would have fit comfortably onto a Temptations Christmas record. Producer Irv Gotti also proves himself at home in an unlikely setting, laying down a serene, spare, warm-fireplace sound for the able vocalist. ASHANTI'S CHRISTMAS charms from the first track, the original "Christmas Time Again," a soft, melodic tune that breaks down into Ashanti's soliloquy about the first time she baked Christmas cookies, delivered without a hint of self-consciousness as if the memory just occurred to her while recording (and maybe it did). The soulful chanteuse then launches into a rendition of "The Christmas Song" in a smooth jazzy style with no unnecessary frills, letting the beauty of the song speak for itself. And so it goes throughout ASHANTI'S CHRISTMAS. The singer clearly loves this time of year and the spirit shines through. Ashanti's Christmas
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Ashanti's Christmas
$11.99 Drive-By Truckers: Mike Cooley, Earl Hicks, Brad Morgan, Rob Malone, Patterson Hood. Additional personnel includes: Kelly Hogan, Annie Richmond, Boston. Producers: Drive-By Truckers, Dick Cooper, David Barbe. Includes liner notes by Patterson Hood. Adapter: Lilla Hood. Audio Mixer: David Barbe. Liner Note Author: Patterson Hood. Recording information: Birmingham, AL. Photographers: Patrick Hood; Wes Freed. A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced ...

Producers include: Troy Taylor, Mervyn Warren, Gordon Chambers. Whitney Houston delivered One Wish: The Holiday Album, her first Christmas record, a year after her 2002 comeback, Just Whitney. If it seemed like that record played it safe, that's nothing compared to One Wish, which is the straightest adult contemporary record Houston ...
| | Lindsay Lohan Speak CD (2004)
Ashanti's Christmas
$12.59 Live Recording
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Lindsay Lohan (vocals); John Shanks (guitar, keyboards, bass instrument); Jason Lader (keyboards, programming); Kristian Lundin (keyboards); Jeff Rothschild (drums, programming); Corey Rooney (background vocals). Lindsay Lohan played a rock & roller in the 2003 remake of the classic Disney identity-change flick Freaky Friday, so perhaps it wasn't a huge stretch for her to leap from acting to singing for the teen idol, yet her 2004 debut, Speak, still feels more like a byproduct of an overdriven, overamplified celebrity culture than an actual album. After all, with just two hit films under her belt, Lindsay wasn't exactly a huge star -- particularly one with a proven track record, one who could regularly open movies or had a fan base ready to follow her to pop music. Nevertheless, it was impossible to read gossip columns, entertainment press, and blogs without reading about Ms. Lohan, whether it was details of her feud with Hilary ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Ashanti's Christmas
$8.49 Personnel: Nathan Calvin (vocals). Audio Mixer: Terry Date. Recording information: Studio Litho, Seattle, WA. Editor: Ingrid Erickson. Arranger: Chris DeGarmo. It makes sense that Terry Date produced Catch Without Arms, Dredg's second record for Interscope. The producer is a veteran of Deftones albums, and it's that band's rich but still rocking palette that's the intent here. And they succeed. Like past Dredg releases Catch has a conceptual flow. But openers "Ode to the Sun" and "Bug Eyes" focus the grandeur and meandering pace of the band's past work around effective melodies and a steadiness in the rhythm. The choruses emphasize the Bono/Chino Moreno in Gavin Hayes' vocal, and when the rhythm drops out for a contemplative piano moment, nothing feels forced because this is what Dredg has been working toward for years. It's not like in the blurry emo world, where string sections crash regularly into soliloquies and it usually just ends up as melodrama. Catch Without Arms looks to ...
| | Lindsay Lohan Little More Personal (Raw) CD (2005)
Ashanti's Christmas
$13.79 Personnel: Kara DioGuardi (background vocals). Teen pop star Lindsay Lohan takes a step away from her Disney-clean image with A LITTLE MORE PERSONAL. Both the cover art, which features a scantily clad Lohan looking seductively over her shoulder, and the album's subtitle, "Raw," indicate that Lohan is growing ...
