(2-CD set) Second album is "The Elusive Truth", plus three new songs and bonus material.
Last Embrace serves as an impressive, if rather confusing, final will and testament from underground favorites Spirit Caravan, who quietly split up after a short but critically acclaimed two-album/one-E.P. run in the late '90s. Another brainchild of American metal icon Scott 'Wino' Weinrich (ex-Saint Vitus, ex-the Obsessed), Spirit Caravan could be said to have rated as the most acclaimed and trouble-free endeavor of his star-crossed career; so many longtime supporters were surprised and dismayed when it too was laid to rest in what seemed to be premature fashion. Without wishing to dwell on the past, however, the obvious practical question about Last Embrace has to be: wouldn't it have been wiser and more satisfying to compile a proper Spirit Caravan anthology, rather than cobble together two previously available albums with assorted extras and rarities? True, many of the extras featured here are exactly what diligent collectors would wish for in such an anthology, but why weren't any there tracks from the excellent -- and truly impossible to track down Dreamwheel E.P. -- unearthed for inclusion then? Given Wino's speedy redirection of his energies into new project Hidden Hand (and temporary involvement with Victor Griffin's Place of Skulls), and bassist Dave Sherman's similarly speedy departure to front Earthride, these questions aren't likely to be answered anytime soon. But until such time as they are, first-time fans who have yet to sample the albums named above will find that Last Embrace provides an easy, affordable, and expanded chance to do so. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Last Embrace CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, ...
| | Pentagram First Daze Here (The Vintage Collection) CD (2002)
Last Embrace music CDs
$13.45 One of heavy metal's great lost bands resurfaces in this follow-up to its previous best-of collection, FIRST DAZE HERE. Based in Washington, D.C., Pentagram existed in various forms during the 1970s and '80s, never achieving anything but local recognition. This collection of demo and live recordings captures the band at its rawest, sounding surprisingly contemporary on cuts like "Wheel of Fortune," while "Show 'Em How" is a stunning display of unique blues power. The band displays its pre-Led Zeppelin roots with a cover of the Yardbirds' "Little Games," showing on "Yes I Do" that it also had pop smarts to spare, while "Virgin Death" is a masterly demonstration of its full-on metal skills.
Though the band's first official album wouldn't be released for over a decade after they first formed, this criminally overlooked Virginia-based Pentagram was an indisputable pioneer of heavy metal. FIRST DAZE HERE, the first of two reissues of ...
| | Obsessed Incarnate CD (1999)
Last Embrace songs
$10.69 The Obsessed are the most unfortunately unappreciated band in hard rock history. Incarnate, a collection of various sessions spanning years and lineups, serves as testament to the band's great essential constants. The trademarks in question are tough but easy-going stoner grooves, Wino's detuned death machine of a guitar, and an absolute heaviness that permeates their work like a weird mixture of sweat and incense. The band, in whatever embodiment, create this heaviness by always working as a unit. Hard rock excesses are avoided; every drum fill and every note of every solo works toward the song rather than individual glory. Make no mistake though, Wino's solos, while tactful, are still heroic -- he offers unique schizo-bluesy runs throughout Incarnate, of particular depth and feeling on the "Streetside/Mourning" sessions from spring '93. Any lyrics that come through the mix hold interest as well, an intelligent individualist stance firmly taken. A very ...
| | Starz Violation CD (1977) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Last Embrace album
$10.45 Starz' sophomore album, Violation, was quite similar to its predecessor. Jack Douglas was still the band's producer, and Starz continued to favor the type of slick, commercial hard rock that would be called pop-metal in the '80s and early '90s. This 1977 LP didn't establish Starz as major players in the pop-metal field; the New Yorkers did have a small following, although not a huge one. Nonetheless, this is an enjoyable record. It doesn't contain any pop-metal masterpieces like Kiss' "Shout It out Loud" or Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," but tracks like "Cherry Baby" and "Rock Six Times" are certainly decent. Most of the time, Starz vocalist Michael Lee Smith sings about the same things that Kiss and Sweet were singing about in the '70s; namely, all-night parties and wild young women in tight dresses. Starz's lyrics, as a rule, were meant to be fun, not profound, and while Violation didn't go down in history as one of pop-metal's all-time classics, it's worth hearing if you're a fan of the style. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Witchcraft Firewood CD (2005)
Last Embrace CD music
$13.85 Ask a group of doom metal or stoner rock enthusiasts what band was the blueprint for the doom/stoner field, and the vast majority will -- without hesitation -- say Black Sabbath. So when a band is as Sabbath-influenced as Witchcraft, it is understandable that some headbangers would describe them as a doom band. But Witchcraft isn't nearly as forceful or as heavy as Eyehategod, Orange Goblin, or Toadliquor, and Firewood isn't typical of what has been considered doom metal and stoner rock in the '90s and 2000 -- actually, this 2005 release shows no awareness of post-'80s metal or even post-'70s metal. Rather, Firewood is a total throwback to the heavy metal, hard rock, and psychedelic rock of the late '60s and very early '70s. Black Sabbath's first few albums with Ozzy Osbourne are a strong influence, and the Swedish band's other inspirations include Jethro Tull, Cream, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, ...
| | Count Basie This Time By Basie CD (1963)
Last Embrace music CDs
$9.39 Recorded in January 1965. Includes liner notes by Marc Crawford & Leonard Feather.
These 16 songs, released on two albums of the mid-'60s, feature a hi-fi, high volume batch of contemporary hits such as "Moon River" and "Oh, Pretty Woman." Basie's orchestra once again displays its abilities to execute music custom-fitted for its time, adding power, grace, and some whimsy to these pop tunes. Quincy Jones' lively arrangements are played with aplomb.
The selections are filled with juicy ...
