On Ghosts, its debut for Interscope, Chicago's Sleeping at Last nestles its earnest little songs into a lush fold of production wizardry. It's not a bad choice. The trio has an obvious admiration for the atmospherics of Unforgettable Fire-era U2, and Ryan O'Neal's quivering vocals mesh well with the sheets of luxurious reverb and yearning strings that haunt the corners of Ghosts. It's this ambitious board work that takes tracks like "Say" and "Currents" to a dreamland far beyond the yearning yet straightforward modern rock of a group like Lifehouse. Like that band, Sleeping at Last came out of the alternative CCM movement, and this is apparent in lyrics that dwell on spiritual and faith issues. "God will you help us understand the meaning of it all?" O'Neal sings on the piano-driven title track. It's a plea, for sure. But the song's insular Radiohead austerity tinges O'Neal's prayer with something darker. After an overture, it ends in a cracked whisper. "Like a moth to the flames/We become helpless." But as questioning of galactic forces as Sleeping at Last can be, it's also a band full of limpid, bright-eyed hope. Sunlight bursts through the moody clouds in the form of "Skeleton of Something More"'s irresistible chorus melody, while the shimmering dream pop of "Brightly" and "Night Must End" suggests the rakish, sometimes raucous sound of young U.K. combos like Muse or JJ72. After all, O'Neal, his drumming brother Chad O'Neal, and bassist pal Dan Perdue are young guys, too. They're allowed to dress up their hopes, confusion, and questioning anger with sumptuous soundscapes, and invite listeners into the dream world their band name suggests. Ghosts could have easily become yet another album bleeding emo-inflected tears for the torturous souls of its creators. Instead, it's a life-size star map flecked with glimmering jewels of melody and the wondering promise of youth. ~ Johnny Loftus

Ghosts album
$10.09 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque ...

| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Ghosts songs
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title ...

$13.75 At times, it was hard to figure out whether Berlin were an average synth pop band trying to carve out their own niche or just a mediocre rock band jumping on the new wave bandwagon. Sure, they had some good singles and radio hits, but as an album band, they left a lot to be desired. Terri Nunn was beautiful and sexy, but it ...

Ghosts album
$17.09 SPOTLIGHT ON SYLVIA(This CD, "De Mi Alma Intima", has recently introduced Sylvia to radio and TV audiences. Her singing style and the beautiful music create an addictive mood that you will experience each time you hear the CD.) Mention "Arthur Avenue" to most people in New York City and you'll see a smile and a widening of the eyes. "That's the Little Italy of the Bronx, isn't it?" This was the neighborhood that was home to Sylvia Bello for her first eight years. Sylvia's father, Silvio, had emigrated to the United States from Ponza, a small island near Ischia and Capri, off the coast of Naples. When he arrived in America, he was eager to establish himself as an engineer in his own business. He had a wonderful tenor voice and enjoyed singing along with the recordings of the great Italian artists. Sylvia's mother, Teresa, although born here, continued the traditions of her parents who also came from Ponza. Mrs. Bello always enjoyed listening to her husband and little Sylvia join voices, singing such popular Italian songs as Vivere! and Reginella Campagnola. . By the age of five it was apparent that Sylvia possessed an unusually beautiful voice and that her future would be in music. When the family moved to northern New Jersey, Sylvia was enrolled in the Academy of the Holy Angels. Here too, the nuns recognized her musical gift. She was encouraged to sing for numerous school functions and was well known for her solo performances. The nuns, who were members of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, arranged an audition for Sylvia at the famed Julliard School in New York. They felt that ...
