| | Is It...Man Or Astroman? CD (1993)
Deed I Do CD music
$10.65 Escapist treats abound from this mysterious, tongue-in-cheek collective from the Southern United States. Man or Astro-man? have an ear for yesterday's sounds of tomorrow, as they decorate their mostly instrumental tracks with obscure sound bytes from out-of-date sci-fi movies and forgotten TV shows. Silly, dangerous, occasionally sloppy, but never boring, their album Is It Man...or Astro-Man? is the answer for everyone running low on laser gun/go-go/surf/spy/cowboy/drag racing/'60s/bullfighter/Mars-invasion/motorbike music. Songs like "Taxidermist Surf," "Invasion of the Dragonmen," and "Journey to the Stars" (originally by the Ventures) gallop along with the energy of a dozen wild stallions headed for Neptune. "Nitrous Burn Out" is a fantastic bit of racetrack romp, liberally mixed with roaring pistons and accident bulletins along the way. With anything so aggressively ...

| | Spike Jones Omnibust/60 Years Of "Music America Hates Best" CD (2002)
Deed I Do songs
$15.29 Omnibust/60 Years of Music America Hates Best pairs two of Spike Jones' Liberty albums from 1960 on one disc. Omnibust is a largely spoken word parody of television programming that takes a swipe at Lawrence Welk, children's programming, commercials, soap operas, and the then-popularity of detective show theme music. "I Search for Golden Adventure (In My Seven Leaky Boots)" manages to parody adventure shows and Martin Denny's "The Quiet Village" at the same time, while "The Wonderful World of Hari Kari" revisits the Asian stereotypes that Jones employed a decade earlier with his hit "Chinese Mule Train." Although recorded after the breakup of Jones' City Slickers, his old cohort Doodles Weaver ...

| | Stan Kenton Contemporary Concepts CD (1955) Bonus Tracks
Deed I Do CD music
$9.19 This is one of the less important Stan Kenton LP reissues on Creative World. Six veteran standards (all arranged by Bill Holman) and Gerry Mulligan's "Limelight" (with a chart from its composer) were adapted for the 1955 Stan Kenton Orchestra; all but "Limelight" are currently available on CD. The music swings well (with drummer Mel Lewis pushing the rhythm section) and such talented soloists as altoists Charlie Mariano and Lennie Niehaus, tenor-saxophonist Bill Perkins, trombonist Carl Fontana and trumpeters Sam Noto and Stu Williamson are well-featured. Nothing all that innovative occurs but this accessible set should be of interest to fans of bop (in addition to Kenton's loyal audience) who do not already have the music on CD. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Big Sandy Jumping From 6 To 6 CD (1994)
Deed I Do music CDs
$10.69 Big Sandy And His Fly-Rite Boys: Big Sandy (vocal, acoustic guitar), Lee Jeffriess (steel guitar), Ashley Kingman (guitar), Wally Hersom (bass fiddle), Bobby Trimble (drums).
While others may suggest that this Western swing/rockabilly outfit's second Hightone release, Swingin' West, is a more definitive representation of the band's potential and brilliance, it is more likely that those who have watched Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys' development will stand by this debut project as the group's defining work. Much in the same way that Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. gave Dwight Yoakam his calling card, Jumping from 6 to 6 gives Big Sandy and the band their identity in the minds of listeners. On this outstanding freshman effort with energy to spare, Big Sandy's voice is phenomenal. The band is tight, especially the teamwork displayed by steel man Lee Jeffriess and lead picker Ashley Kingman. As always, the King of California, Dave Alvin, is an impeccable producer who knows how to get the very best from each artist. The additions of guests Brantley Kearns on fiddle and ...
| | Receptionists Last Letter CD (1999)
Deed I Do songs
$9.55 On The Last Letter, the Receptionists succeed in creating an endearing lo-fi indie rock record full of surprises. The music is instantly reminiscent of the Raincoats. Half of the disc is new material, while the other half was previously released on various indie rock compilations. The visceral combination of Tanya (guitar), Lara (accordion and bells), and Jenn (mandolin, xylophone and penny whistle) created a unique arrangement ...
| | Crusaders At Their Best CD (1992)
Deed I Do album
$6.29 Joe Sample (piano, keyboards); Pops Popwell (bass); Stix Hooper (drums, percussion).
As a band, the Crusaders were always the most respected, as intelligence and earthiness permeated throughout their best work. The group -- Joe Sample on keyboards, Wilton Felder on bass/saxophone, Wayne Henderson playing trombone, and drummer Stix Hooper -- had been together for close to 15 years when all of the work on this album, At Their Best, was recorded. The title is somewhat misleading. These tracks were compiled from two 1970-1971 albums, Old Socks, New Shoes and Pass the Plate. Both efforts were released when Motown was distributing Chisa in the early '70s. During the time the Crusaders dropped the "Jazz" part of their ...
