| | Supertramp Live, 1997 CD (2006) (Import) England
Bootleg Series 1 : Live In 1999 CD music
$8.45 After Supertramp split in 1987, fans waited nearly ten years before most members of the best-known lineup reunited for an album (1997's Some Things Never Change) and tour. But while one of the group's two leaders was included in the proceedings (Rick Davies), the other one was not (Roger Hodgson). Regardless, the "new look" Supertramp soldiered on with a stage show that expectedly focused primarily on the classics -- as reflected on the 2006 release Live, 1997. Despite the long layoff between studio albums (and Hodgson's absence), Supertramp sound as bombastic and flawless as ever, as such longtime classic rock radio standards as "Goodbye Stranger" and "The Logical Song" sound very similar to the original studio versions. ~ Greg Prato

| | Too Slim & The Taildraggers Tales Of Sin & Redemption CD (2003)
Bootleg Series 1 : Live In 1999 music CDs
$11.49 With albums such as El Rauncho Grundgé, King Size Troublemakers, and Rock 'em Dead already in their catalog, it would seem that Spokane's most revered blues-roots rockers would have more sin than redemption on their minds. But this disc's title accurately describes its contents, which find guitarist/vocalist Tim "Too Slim" Langford dipping into both concepts with equal ferocity. His sly, whiskey-tinged vocals and lyrical yet blunt guitar can't help but be compared to early, pre-MTV fame ZZ Top, especially when he's getting lecherous on "Oven Burning Woman" ("she really likes ...

| | Chrome, Smoke & BBQ: The ZZ Top Box CDs (2003) Limited Edition; Remastered
Bootleg Series 1 : Live In 1999 album
$67.79 Additional personnel includes: Don Summers (bass); Tom Moore (organ); Lanier Greg (bass); Dan Mithcell (drums).
Recorded between 1968 & 1992. Includes liner notes by James Austin, Tom Vickers.
Prior to 2003's Chrome, Smoke & BBQ, ZZ Top's catalog was crying out for a comprehensive retrospective. Not that the band hadn't been anthologized before: they had two hits collections, with notably different track listings, and in 1987's Six Pack, they even had a makeshift box set, but all three of these were hampered by limited focus and haphazard execution. Chrome, Smoke & BBQ addresses both of these concerns by focusing on the trio's 20 years at Warner -- from 1970's ZZ Top's First Album to 1990's Recycler -- picking the best 70 or so songs from these ten albums and spreading them over the course of a lavish four-disc, 80-track box set. This is the first logical approach to ZZ Top's career yet, and while it isn't a perfect collection, it comes tantalizingly close to that ideal. The primary problem is that by the time the fourth disc rolls around, the collection has lost considerable momentum -- ...

| | Chris Cacavas Bumbling Home From The Star CD (2002)
Bootleg Series 1 : Live In 1999 music CDs
$10.45 Released three years after Dwarf Star, Bumbling Home From the Star introduces yet another backup band for Chris Cacavas. Ed Kampwirth (bass), Brandon Laws (drums), and Jesse Wilder (guitar, keys) are more than supporting musicians. Despite the fact that the album is billed as a solo effort, the music achieves a fully integrated group sound, much more than the singer's previous three solo efforts. That said, this is by no means a step back to the rock energy of Junkyard Love's records. This CD contains a set of finely crafted medium-tempo songs, part folky Neil Young (the obligatory comparison when writing about Cacavas), part post-Radiohead alternative rock production. Acoustic guitar, electric piano, slithery basslines, and earth-grounded drumming become the basic tools to give impetus to the singer's memorable melodies and sweet-and-sour lyrics. Of the first category we must retain "California (Into the Ocean)," "Saviour" (great trombone solo by Chris Colonier), and the opener "Sucker," slightly destabilizing thanks to a dreamy pace and artsy studio tricks that give it a flavor closer to Jay-Jay Johansson than anything else you could expect. But don't worry, that's ...
