| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Behind A...
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut Spirit was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K. but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets ...
| | Pearl Jam vs. CD (1993)
Behind A...
$7.59 Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder (vocals); Stone Gossard, Mike McCready (guitar); Jeff Ament (bass); Dave Abbruzzese (drums). Recorded at The Site, Nicasio, California and Potatohead Studio, Seattle, Washington. VS. was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Daughter" was nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, and "Go" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance. Personnel: Dave Abbruzzese (drums). Recording information: Potatohead, Seattle, WA; The Site, Nicasio, CA. Pearl Jam took to superstardom like deer in headlights. Unsure of how to maintain their rigorous standards of integrity in the face of massive commercial success, the band took refuge in willful obscurity -- the title of their second album, Vs., did not appear anywhere in the packaging, and they refused to release any singles or videos. (Ironically, many fans then paid steep prices for import CD singles, a situation the band eventually rectified.) The eccentricities underline Pearl Jam's almost paranoid aversion to charges of hypocrisy or egotism -- but it also made sense to use the spotlight for progress. You could see that reasoning in their ensuing battle with Ticketmaster, and you could hear it in the record itself. Vs. is often Eddie Vedder at his most strident, both lyrically and vocally. It's less oblique than Ten in its topicality, and sometimes downright dogmatic; having the world's ear renders Vedder unable to resist a few simplistic potshots at favorite white-liberal targets. Yet a little self-righteousness is an acceptable price to pay for the passionate immediacy that permeates Vs. It's a much rawer, looser record than Ten, feeling like a live performance; Vedder ...

$16.99 More crude 'n crazy mid-1960s garage rock from the legendary Midwest studio, Arlyn Miller's Midnite Sound (and Milky Way label). It was a maverick outfit hidden in the Midwestern town of Danville, Illinois, producing some of the most bizarre recordings o
Liner Note Author: Alec Palao. All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology. Photographer: Arlie Miller. The Midnite Sound studio in Danville, IL was one of many such operations grinding out obscure garage rock in the mid-'60s. If any of its product is remembered at all, it's the weird rockabilly-cum-garage of Dean Carter, who put out a few singles on the Milky Way label. Carter's legacy ...
| | Coldplay X & Y CD (2005)
Behind A...

Personnel: Matt McGinn (guitar); Chris Tombling, Laura Melhuish, Richard George, Anne Lines, Peter Lale, Sue Dench, Audrey Riley (strings); Brian Eno (synthesizer); Robert Smith , Mark Pythian, Carmen Rizzo (computer). Recording information: Air Lyndhurst; Air Lyndhusrt; CRC; Parr Street; Sam West; Sarm west; The Hit Factory, New York, NY; TownHouse. Photographers: Coldplay; Kevin Westenberg; Tom Sheehan. After Radiohead stubbornly refused to accept the mantle of world's biggest and most important rock band by releasing the willfully strange rocktronica fusion Kid A in 2000, Coldplay stepped up to the plate with their debut, Parachutes. Tasteful, earnest, introspective, anthemic, and grounded in guitars, the British quartet was everything Radiohead weren't but what the public wanted them to be, and benefited from the Oxford quintet's decision to abandon rock stardom for arcane art rock. Parachutes became a transatlantic hit and 2002's sequel, A Rush of Blood to the Head, consolidated their success by being bigger and better than Parachutes, positioning Coldplay to not be just the new Radiohead, but the new U2: a band that belongs to the world but whose fans believe that the music is for them alone. To that end, Coldplay's third album, X&Y -- slightly delayed so it follows Rush of Blood by nearly three years, but that's no longer than the time separating OK Computer and Kid A, or The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree -- is designed to be the record that elevates Coldplay to the major leagues, where they are at once the biggest and most important band in the world. It's deliberate and sleek, cinematic and pristine, hip enough ...
