Though Bob Weir sang lead on roughly half of the Grateful Dead's songs, and co-wrote many of them, he was frequently overshadowed by Jerry Garcia. This collection attempts to redress the balance, presenting two disc's worth of Weir's finest work with and without the Dead. Weir's first solo album, ACE, was basically a Dead album in disguise, featuring the entire band backing him on material that would become a vital chunk of the Dead's repertoire. Most of that essential album is included here, alongside songs from Weir's later solo efforts, some slightly jazzier and a couple cast in a more hard-hitting rock format. In fact, only one song on the first disc (the funky "Feel Like a Stranger") is from a Dead album. Wisely, Weir's Dead work is presented on the second disc in live performances, which were always the band's strongest suit.
The brotherly road anthem "Truckin'," flower-power love song "Sugar Magnolia," and percolating political commentary "Throwing Stones" are some of Weir's strongest compositions, represented here by powerful concert recordings. The Dead's Weir-led cover tunes take a bow as well, with the churning "New Minglewood Blues," calypso standard "Man Smart, Woman Smarter," and a transcendent take on Kris Kristofferson's country-rock classic "Me & Bobby McGee." Long overdue but comprehensive, WEIR HERE spotlights an underrated aspect of the Dead's magical sound.
Includes liner notes by Dennis McNally.

| Weir Here: The Best Of Bob Weir Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Blackthroated I gave this a 5 only because I love Bob... But how can you have a Bob Weir "best of" without Black Throated Wind?
Well I'm goin' back home, thats what I'm goin' to do. Submitted by Jim (Hyde Park, VT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Weir Impressed I agree with the person who said it is a shame that Bob is often overshadowed by Garcia's boundless talent. This album is a great way to isolate Bob from the Jerry factor(even though he obviously play guitar on a number of these tracks) and focus solely on Bob's songwriting and his playing with other musicians. Lazy Lightning/Supplication with Kingfish is amazing and such a nice change from the Dead versions live. You really hear his maturing as a songwriter from his Ace material through his Heaven Help the Fool era (overproduced yes, but wasn't everything from the studio in 1978?)into his Ratdog project. I recommend this to anyone. Submitted by maleydrummer (Bethel CT USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Simpply tremendous! Bob Weir's contribution to the greatest live band ever has been so overshadowed throughout the history of the Grateful Dead's history. His ecclectic approach to music is focused in this wonderful collection of studio and live performances. His voice has gotten better through the years, and his legacy is still being constructed.Anyone who wants to hear the voice of the Dead can hear him live with his band Ratdog. If you're planning to attend his tour, listen to this cd on the trip to the show....and may the strange trip continue forever...Grateful,but definately not dead Submitted by biggbloo (Glassboro,NJ,USA) Was This Review Helpful?
