Snowed In was recorded during the last year of Tim Rose's life, and the process was, in producer Colin Winston-Fletcher's words, "like trying to tame a lion with a rubber chair." The end result is a short album that is dark, depressing, haunting, atmospheric, ominous, and raw as a bare nerve. Everything moves at a slow (and somehow desperate) pace, with Winston-Fletcher's frequent orchestrations giving the whole sequence a kind of ponderous claustrophobia, and the overall tone here is one of enforced defeat and regret. Rose is perhaps most famous for his arrangements of two traditional-sounding tunes, "Hey Joe" and "Morning Dew," and arguably the two best songs on this offering are again drawn from folk pieces, "Down in the Valley" (which contains the telling line "roses love sunshine") and "Hanging Tree," both of which are bone-chillingly bleak in tone. Nothing here is going to cheer anybody up (unless you're Nick Cave or Leonard Cohen), and while this certainly is not an easy album to listen to, it also paints a portrait of an artist unwilling to make any last concessions. If taming Rose for these sessions was difficult, well, you get what you get, because this album sounds like it comes from the heart of a caged lion. ~ Steve Leggett

Granted, this 24-track anthology will appeal almost exclusively to those with very deep British '60s/psychedelic collections, gathering bits and pieces from every stage of his career. It's also true that the best work West did is not actually on here, but on the eponymous (and only) album by Tomorrow, which is still easily available on CD. Unsurprisingly, given her wide-ranging artistic focus since the start of Tarnation, Indoor Universe isn't so much a new direction for Paula Frazer as simply a further consolidation of her strengths, at once drawing on the sheer variety that she enjoys working with while still maintaining a key central vision. Her rich, classically country vocals again ground her music in a sound of mythic America, as much as, say, the singing of her fellow Bay Area musician Chris Isaak, and like Isaak, she quietly, carefully combines things into an all-encompassing style. Judy Garland's first two Capitol Records albums, 1955's Miss Show Business and 1956's Judy, are combined on this discount-priced reissue. Both were recorded when the singer was 33 years old. By then, she had come to the end of her Hollywood career and launched her second career as a concert performer. Both albums were tied into television specials without being soundtracks per se. The ten tracks making up Miss Show Business actually hearkened back further, since they constituted much of the repertoire Garland had developed to launch her stage act in 1951, combining songs from her movies and old vaudeville numbers, many of them organized into medleys featuring special introductory material fashioned by longtime Garland associate Roger Edens. To listen to such tracks as "Judy at the Palace" was to get a sense of at least what the audio was like at one of Garland's shows. Naturally, the set concluded with her signature number, "Over the Rainbow," which oddly comes halfway through this disc, since Miss Show Business is followed by Judy, a collection of songs arranged by Nelson Riddle.
