Hold on because this can get confusing. In 1997, Todd Rundgren released an album called With a Twist, where our hero decided rework a bunch of his favorites in the bossa nova style so popular with the hipsters in the waning days of the great mid-'90s lounge revival. Because of this, it's easy to assume that the convolutely titled Greatest Classics: With a Twist is a reissue of that album, or at least an album in a similar spirit. It's not. It's a double-disc repackaging of two of the worst albums in the Rundgren catalog: 2000's Todd Rundgren: Reconstructed and 2002's Todd Rundgren & His Friends. Both feature reworkings of original Todd tapes, maintaining elements of the original vocal track and adding new instruments by the truckload. Reconstructed, as its futuristic title may suggest, features 14 electronica remixes, while & His Friends has a host of hard rock guitar gods -- well, Vivian Campbell, Gary Hoey, Skunk Baxter, and Bruce Kulick, anyway -- layers new instruments, and spews out pointless guitar lines behind the vocals. That's it. There are no reinventions, no reinterpretations, just wanking. It's not even interesting as a novelty. But if you're a Rundgren completist, Greatest Classics: With a Twist is at least a way to kill two birds with one stone and get his two worst albums at once. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Greatest Classics: With A Twist Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) Novel concept A previous review stated "Todd hasn't made a great album in years." Are you deaf? What about "Liars" which ranks way up on his "best" list? Anyway, rather than one of those artist tribute albums where everyone takes a stab at redoing the artist's songs, this takes a different approach- remixes and overdubs. As much as I hated a recent remix of classic Miles Davis tunes, I like this effort. Submitted by jbass (Anaheim, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Let someone else be creative for a while OK, we all know that Todd hasn't created a really good album in years. So how does our boy keep his career alive? He gets some pals to overdub their talents on some past hits, and some with-it kids to remix/remodel some of the same hits. Interesting, but for die-hard Todd fans only. Great Listening! "With A little Help from My Friends" disc is worth the price alone. Some excellent stuff! I enjoy this CD very much. This is one of those recordings that is good from beginning to end. The new recordings and mixes are very cool. The arrangements and all of the musicians playing make it a must have. Edgar Winter has always been one of my favorites and his sax on "Hello It's Me" is great. Some well knows; Steve Stevens from Billy Idols band, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter who plays with The Doobie Bros, Steely Dan & many others. Dweezil Zappa, Gary Hoey, Tony Levin (One of the greatest bass players out there) and many other friends play. My favorite is a great version of "Mated" featuring guitarist Richie Kotzen... But more exciting to me on the track are the background vocals by all around great artist Kasim Sulton. Submitted by Kenny (Rhode Island) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hate it I hate this new direction Todd is taking -- he seems to be butchering his music in the name of technology. "With a twist" was a great CD; this one is awful. Submitted by deb (seattle) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
