Uptown Saturday Night video
$8.79 SUPERFLY, along with COFFY and SHAFT, completes Blaxploitations's best known
triumvirate. One of the highest-grossing pictures of 1972, SUPERFLY became an instant classic, and established director Gordon Parks firmly in Warner Brothers' sights to make THREE THE HARD WAY in 1974. Parks was one of the first African American directors to get financing from a major Hollywood studio to make the 1969 film THE LEARNING TREE.
Super Fly is a cocaine dealer who begins to realize that his life will soon end with either prison or his death. He decides to build an escape from the life by making his biggest deal yet, converting the coke to cash and running off to start a new life. The problem is that the Mob does ...

$9.85 Clyde Williams (Sidney Poitier) and Billy Foster (Bill Cosby) belong to a community group called The Sons and Daughters of Shaka. The city of Atlanta has plans to take away the group's meeting place, and The Sons and Daughters of Shaka don't have the money to finance a new one. Uptown Saturday Night DVD
$14.35 An independent feature that chronicles the lives of three teenage girls in Jersey City who are involved with crack cocaine, ON THE OUTS does not shy away from the hard issues involved. Between the ages of 15 and 17, Oz (Judy Marte) is a street dealer whose mom is a recovering junkie, Marisol (Paola Mendoza) is an unemployed crack addict struggling to feed her infant daughter, and Suzette (Anny Mariano) is pregnant by her homeless, crack-dealer boyfriend (Henri Marteau). All three of the girls end up in juvenile detention, and from there their lives only get harder.
Shot in a bright, color-saturated palette, with great handheld camerawork (reminiscent of early Scorcese or Nick Gomez's LAWS OF GRAVITY), this film rings with authenticity. The script, developed by Lori Silverbush, is terse and realistic, drawing on improv workshops that Silverbush held with inner-city ...
