Tonex (pronounced "Toe-Nay") gained a reputation as a maverick in the Christian music world with his unorthodox style and his willingness to take chances--his rebellious nature garnered the young singer comparisons to Prince. Tonex's uniqueness is evident on the two-disc live record OUT THE BOX, particularly on his between-song exhortations to the crowd, expressed in of-the-moment, hip-hop-influenced language. It's a fitting connection, as both rap and gospel are based in passion, an emotion fully embraced by Tonex and his R&B-leaning band. As with much spiritual-based music, nowhere is the energy stronger than in a live setting, and this set of performances doesn't disappoint, with more than two hours of sweet praise-oriented songs such as "Make Me Over" and "Believer." OUT THE BOX shows that the most beautiful spirit can come out of breaking with binding traditions.
Personnel: Tonéx (vocals); Kirk Franklin, Morpheus, Applejaxx, Sheila E., Yolanda Adams.

Remarkably Talented The music is different from anything I've ever heard. Tonex is wild and very, very talented. He could hit it really big in the secular society. I only got the CD for "Make Me Over Again." And I am not disappointed. Submitted by dorcash (Harrisburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Out The Box album
$8.99 Detroit vocalist Fred Hammond has danced skillfully on that gloriously blurred line between gospel and sweet soul music for decades, whether solo or with his group Commissioned. Hammond's knack for letting the spirit resound in his vocals has earned him a well-deserved following. The energetic SOMETHIN' 'BOUT LOVE adds to his catalogue of energetic records with a slate of inspired, groove-laden odes to salvation.
Hammond is also a skillful songwriter, co-penning most of the album's tunes, including the deft, intricate single "Celebrate (He Lives)." Brian McKnight and Marvin L. Winans join him for a lustrous trio on the undeniably catchy "Lord We Need Your Love." Hammond's closest ...

Out The Box music CDs
$8.95 Gospel meets hip-hop in the shape of Detroit artist Deitrick Haddon's CROSSROADS, which, in addition to some fine worship music, boasts some slamming beats, from the bubbling rhythms of "7-Ds" to the Earth, Wind & Fire-like "U.N.I.T.Y." Haddon's smoothly assured vocals bring an Usher-like urgency to the redemptive "It's Over Now," while things take a more traditional turn on the majestic "God Didn't Give Up." Haddon is joined by Contemporary Christian music pioneer Reverend Rance Allen on "Had Not Been," which, in its old-school approach, recalls the Reverend Allen's roots as a Stax recording artist. Pastor and self-help guru Paula White assists with a few inspirational words on the Caribbean-inflected "Walls Are Tumbling." CROSSROADS ...

| | Kirk Franklin Hero CD (2005)
Out The Box CD music
$9.59 Though testimonies of faith and questions of morality are still at the heart of Kirk Franklin's message, 2005's HERO represents something of a musical departure for the gospel superstar. Recorded with a full orchestra--complete with lush strings and driving horns--HERO is one of Franklin's most musically ambitious outings.
Featuring guest appearances by Stevie Wonder ("Why"), Dorinda Clark-Cole ("Hero"), and Yolanda Adams ("Afterwhile"), not to mention a song that utilizes a Tears for Fears sample ( "Let It Go"), the album offers plenty of variety, and a few surprises, in addition to its large-scale arrangements. Franklin manages to integrate these new elements perfectly into the celebratory and healing music on which he's built his career.

$15.19 To buy to our most recent effort, "Product For American Radio" please visit: http:// cdbaby /starfuzz2The spark that became Starfuzz was a twinkle in the mind of Josh Skelton (Xiren, Losing November) in late 2003. He wanted to put together a group of musicians who, first and foremost, would satisfy an elusive quality for bands: chemistry. After auditioning 20 guitar player/songwriters, the classically trained Skelton met Ryan Countryman and found someone whose attention to melody, lyrics, and song composition would help to produce the band's signature full-bodied guitar and vocal harmonies. The resulting sound has been compared to the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and late 60's classic rock forged with more modern acts such as early Radiohead, Pavement, and Coldplay. For three months the two worked out songs while continuing to search for the rhythm section. After auditioning numerous combinations, they found the other half of Starfuzz in Jared Schiltz (drums) and Curtis Durham (bass), both of whom worked with Ryan. They were more than willing to help record a three-song demo so Josh and Ryan could move forward with their project. After three practices, Jared and Curtis were hooked and joined the band full time. Starfuzz was born. The three-song demo quickly bloomed into a full length, 11-song album. Rather than lose focus by booking gigs right away, the band decided the best approach was to finish the album and polish it as much as possible, design some merchandise, and then hit the scene full force in early fall of 2004. In addition, they developed a multimedia intro to their live performances which draws upon mid-twentieth century atomic bomb/science nerd obsessions."They're ...
