Ron O'Neal in the smart, streetwise box office success about a pusher who tries to make one last killer deal before kicking the business. Featuring a hit Curtis Mayfield score. Year: 1972 Director: Gordon Parks, Jr. Starring: Ron O'Neal, Carl Lee, Julius W. Harris Priest is a Harlem cocaine dealer who wants to get out of the drug business. But in order to do so, he must eliminate the syndicate kingpins keeping him down. SUPERFLY, along with COFFY and SHAFT, completes Blaxploitations's best known
triumvirate. One of the highest-grossing pictures of 1972, SUPERFLY became an instant classic, and established director Gordon Parks firmly in Warner Brothers' sights to make THREE THE HARD WAY in 1974. Parks was one of the first African American directors to get financing from a major Hollywood studio to make the 1969 film THE LEARNING TREE.
Super Fly is a cocaine dealer who begins to realize that his life will soon end with either prison or his death. He decides to build an escape from the life by making his biggest deal yet, converting the coke to cash and running off to start a new life. The problem is that the Mob does not have a retirement plan and will give him a choice of staying and selling for them or dying if they find out his intentions. With a terrific score by Curtis Mayfield and a star wearing threads to match, SUPERFLY is chock full of the sass, flash, and action Blaxploitation is known for. Color by Technicolor.

Superfly review
$8.75 Legendary comedian and rap forefather Rudy Ray Moore turns in a dynamic and hilarious performance as the meanest, rhyme-spouting mack of them all in this revered underground spoof of 70s blaxploitation flicks. After being framed by some evil white cops, Dolemite emerges from the slammer ready for revenge with his old friends (including Queen Bee and her loyal pleasure girls) rallied behind him. But this is no NAKED GUN style send-up- it's played straight, which is why it's stood the test of time. Followed by THE HUMAN TORNADO (aka DOLEMITE 2).

Superfly DVD
$6.29 African-American writer Max Julien (also an actor who played the lead role in the pimpsploitation classic THE MACK) stirred up the Hollywood studio system with CLEOPATRA JONES, the first film of the genre to feature a butt-kicking woman in the title role.
A buxom beauty, undercover narcotics agent Cleopatra Jones (Tamara Dobson)
is the principal operative in a covert scheme to eradicate an international drug trade. She's pulled away from important business when a phony raid on her boyfriend's ghetto halfway house puts the place in jeopardy. The source of her domestic troubles is Mommy, a raunchy underworld eccentric who uses her connections with bad cops on the force to cause trouble for Cleopatra's friends and set her up for an attack. With its non-stop action and hit soundtrack featuring a title track sung by Millie Jones, CLEOPATRA JONES is as fun to watch as it is culturally significant.

$9.85 Clyde Williams (Sidney Poitier) and Billy Foster (Bill Cosby) belong to a community group called The Sons and Daughters of Shaka. The city of Atlanta has plans to take away the group's meeting place, and The Sons and Daughters of Shaka don't have the money to finance a new one. Clyde and Billy come up with a hair-brained scheme to raise money for a new lodge hall by fixing a boxing match. Their plan is to hypnotize a weakling boxer and make him think he's unbeatable. Then they'll place bets on his "sure-win" fights. Their idea is so crazy that it just might work. But if anyone finds out what they're up to, there will be hell to pay.
Unusual names like "Biggie Smalls" (Calvin Lockhart), "Kansas City Mack" (John Amos), "Bootney Farnsworth" (Jimmie Walker), and "Fish an' Chips Freddie" (Morgan Roberts) add to the comic value of the film's line-up of characters.
Cosby, with his usual raucous antics, is a perfect complement to Poitier's understated humor. Curtis Mayfield's music creates the right funky atmosphere for this film.

| | Maximum Risk/Out For A Kill DVDs (1996)
Superfly review
$19.59 MAXIMUM RISK, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, is the story of twin brothers. Unlike the earlier film--in which he played brothers with contrasting characters--here he's a French policeman, Alain Moreau, who takes on the identity of his dead brother, Mikhail. They were separated at birth when their mother, Chantal, played by veteran French film actress Stephane Audran, gave one up for adoption to a Russian diplomat. He grew up to become a member of the new Russian Mafia operating out of the Little Odessa section of New York City. When Mikhail is murdered in France after a wild chase through the streets, Alain goes to New York, where he's assumed to be Mikhail by everyone from the local Russian crime boss to his brother's beautiful girlfriend, Alex (Natasha Henstridge).
OUT FOR A KILL: Archaeologist Robert Burns (Steven Seagal) has unearthed some priceless artifacts in eastern China. When he discovers that the Chinese mafia--the Tong--are using them as containers to smuggle drugs overseas, Burns is marked for death. The Tong frame him for the murder of his assistant and he is thrown in a Chinese prison--but when he is released and used as bait in a joint effort by the Chinese and American governments to attract the Tong, Burns has his chance at vengeance.
