| | Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are CD (1973)
Swing 48 songs
$16.15 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation.
The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in Line," this album also spotlights how far Jon Lord's contributions on organ went toward defining the band's sound. Lord's mastery was such that in addition to the ...

| | Mark O'Connor Live In New York CD (2005)
Swing 48 CD music
$13.39 Violinist Mark O'Connor's third recording with his Hot Swing Trio is more than just a tribute to the great Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, as it also showcases the leader's compositions. Joined by ex-Grappelli bassist Jon Burr and guitarist Frank Vignola (who is influenced by Reinhardt though his style range extends much farther), the trio shows the influence of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France while incorporating their individual styles into old favorites like "Fascinating Rhythm," and "Ain't Misbehavin," though the chugging, bluesy setting of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" is hard to beat. Among O'Connor's many originals, the demanding "Gypsy Fantastic" (which one can easily imagine Grappelli and Reinhardt playing), "Fiddler Going Home" (a moving tribute to Claude "Fiddler" Williams) and the deliciously loopy "Funky Swing" are all highlights. But all is eclipsed by the virtuoso display of musicianship in O'Connor's ridiculously up-tempo arrangement of the old chestnut "Tiger Rag." Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden
If hard bop and Dixieland can have their neo-classicists and nostalgia lovers, there is no reason why Gypsy swing shouldn't have them as well -- and in fact, Europe is full of Gypsy swing artists who faithfully emulate Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli's classic recordings of the 1930s and 1940s. But not all Gypsy swing artists are stuck in the past, and not all Gypsy swing artists ...

| | Davka Golem CD (2003)
Swing 48 music CDs
$13.99 The Golem represents about half of Daniel Hoffman's full 90-minute score for the 1920 German expressionist film Der Golem, in which a clay statue is brought to life in order to protect the Jews of Warsaw from expulsion. Davka's background in Eastern European music and Jewish melody makes him a perfect fit for this new score. For this project, Davka's violin, cello, and percussion are augmented by the bassoon and clarinet of Paul Hanson. This is beautiful music that wholly succeeds on its own, without any tie to the film. It would be interesting to see the film with Davka's entire score, then to contrast it with the score composed by Gary ...

$10.89 On their seventh full-length album, this Wisconsin-based quartet continues to pursue their heavy, hooky vision of what Christian music can be. Even with a lyric sheet, it's hard to distinguish this from good old-fashioned ...
