Personnel inlcudes: Wycleff Jean, R. Kelly, Pras, Mary J. Blige, Youssou N'Dour. Much to his credit, Wyclef Jean is more of a producer in the vein of classic R&B and soul producers than he is in alignment with many of his contemporaries. Where most hip-hop and R&B producers are just focused on making a beat or making the hook as catchy as possible, Wyclef has a vision beyond that with his production style as well as his endeavors as a solo artist. This attention to detail and broad scope of music styles has been evident since his early years as a key member (if not the key member) of the Fugees. In a genre where formulas and playing it safe are the norm, Wyclef is a mad scientist taking constant risks and fusing elements of almost every genre imaginable into an amazing signature sound. And although not every experiment can be deemed a success (his cover versions of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and a duet with Kenny Rogers revisiting "The Gambler" immediately come to mind), Wyclef's production skills on his worst day are still better than many producers' finest hour. Greatest Hits covers three solo albums over a period of six years. While the argument can be made that such a short span of time might warrant a greatest-hits compilation a bit premature, Wyclef has enough quality tracks to justify one -- especially if you are just looking to own his most well-known hits. From his commercial successes on the pop chart ("We Trying to Stay Alive" with fellow ex-Fugee Pras and the classic "Gone Till November") to some of his lesser known hits that only made an impact on the R&B charts, every single one of his finest solo moments is contained here. Die-hard fans will already own many, if not all, of these tracks, but those just getting warmed up to Wyclef's style will find Greatest Hits to be an essential primer. ~ Rob Theakston Since dropping THE CARNIVAL, his first solo record outside the umbra of the Fugees, to critical acclaim in 1997, Wyclef Jean has consistently created intriguing music, constantly experimenting with different styles and collaborating with unlikely artists from various genres. Jean's debut broke out with the insistent Bee Gees beat of the party anthem "We Trying to Stay Alive," but buried in the folds was the sublimely beautiful, heartfelt ballad "Gone Till November," which would go on to become an unlikely top 10 pop hit. The former song referenced Bob Dylan in its lyrics, while the video of the latter featured a cameo of the folk hero, an unlikely influence that manifested itself on every Wyclef record, leading to a subdued cover of the Dylan's eulogic "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." Surprisingly sincere rock covers have been a hallmark of Jean's career, and none are more improbable or impressive than his mostly-straight-with-a-twist-of-reggae interpretation of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." On the other hand, a single listen to his hit with movie/wrestling icon the Rock, "It Doesn't Matter," reminds one that 'Clef also knows exactly how to get the party started. This GREATEST HITS collection features all of these tracks and many more by Wyclef, a pioneering performer who's continually expanded the boundaries of hip-hop.

| | Bill Evans Last Waltz: The Final Recordings CDs (2000) Box Set
Greatest Hits
$84.19 Bill Evans Trio: Bill Evans (piano); Marc Johnson (bass); Joe LaBarbera (drums). Recorded live at Keystone Korner, San Francisco, California from August 31-September 8, 1980. Includes liner notes by Todd Barkan and Derk Richardson. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (2000, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). In the wake of a sampling from Bill Evans' last gig that came out on Timeless a while back, here are eight more CDs from those concerts - the last of which occured exactly a week before Evans' death in New York City at age 51. The location was San Francisco's Keystone Korner, and club owner/now-producer Todd Barkan kept his tape machine rolling throughout the nine-day gig. Despite some tape hiss, the sound is full and clear - much better than that of The Secret Sessions at the Village Vanguard. If there are any physical signs of impending death, you cannot hear them in Evans' playing. All of his technique and stamina is intact (hear the flawless, rapid right-hand runs on "Someday My Prince Will Come" on Disc Five), his harmonic imagination right on course, indeed inspired in several patches, and each night's work is quite even in overall quality. There is, however, an autumnal feeling throughout the set, and there are few, if any, startling surprises in the by-now well-worn repertoire. "Nardis" is played no less than six times, usually at great length. The final "Nardis" of his life Sep. 8 lasts nearly 20 minutes; as he explains on Disc Three, he continued to find new things in that tune to the end, though it is somewhat disfigured by a useless, overlong drum solo. Most of the time, his young sidemen from the period, Marc Johnson (bass) and Joe LaBarbera (drums) are very supportive. This set confirms what Warner Bros.' Turn Out The Stars box - recorded three months before - indicated, that Evans' last months on this planet produced a lot of prime vintage music, even though the pianist was merely reprising and refining a direction that had been set in stone long before. There are apparently enough well-heeled members of the Evans cult out there to support this expensive proposition - this ...

The late '90s ushered in a second golden age of progressive hip-hop, as a group of ambitious young lions rose from the underground to redefine the art of lyrical technique and revive the idea that hip-hop had relevant statements to make. With their 2000 debut album, Blackalicious established themselves as one of the West Coast's top outfits in this vein, and while it was very good, their follow-up, Blazing Arrow, is simply fantastic, vaulting the duo to the forefront of the progressive hip-hop pack. Much of Blazing Arrow retains NIA's airy, laconic feel, but the group's sense of craft has improved to a startling degree; the hooks are sharper and more plentiful, Gift of Gab's rhymes are denser, Chief Xcel's production is more breathtakingly lush, and his arrangements more sophisticated. What's more, the tracks draw from a rich sonic palette -- not just the expected jazz-funk and old-school influences, but straight pop (check the Nilsson sample on the title track) and smooth soul (particularly the Philly variety, but also the contemporary neo-soul revival) in particular. In spite of the duo's intellectual bent, the grooves on Blazing Arrow exude a tremendous warmth that's only complemented by the positivity of their messages. And if Gift of Gab wasn't recognized among hip-hop's premier lyricists before, he certainly ought to be now; his raps are jam-packed with internal rhymes, allusions, metaphors, ten-cent words, and amazing tongue-twisting feats of skill. Guests include members of Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, and Latyrx (all worthy company), not to mention singer/songwriter Ben Harper, Zack de la Rocha (Rage Against the ...
