| | Lionel Richie Definitive Collection CD - Import Lionel Richie Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
The first pressings of THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION included a bonus disc featuring rare tracks.
This remastered set of greatest hits features Lionel Richie's favorites from both his stint with the Commodores and his solo career, including "Three Times a Lady," "Dancing on the Ceiling" and "All Night Long."
THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION, though not as thorough as the excellent two-disc set GOLD (released a year prior), is a handy overview of the Commodores' career, beginning with 1974's "Machine Gun" and concluding with 1985's "Nightshift." The only Top Ten R&B hits not included here are "Sail On," and a couple of later '80s cuts, so all the big funk jams ("Too Hot ta Trot," "Brick House," "Lady [You Bring Me Up],") and ballads ("Zoom," "Easy," "Three Times a Lady") are indeed included. This set also scores a little extra by including one of the band's best album cuts, 1976's "Girl, I Think the World About You," which has been left off at least 90-percent of all Commodores comps.
Although Lionel Richie was AWOL for most of the '90s, he's still a pop culture force to be reckoned with, and THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION ably supports this assertion. Between his work as a frontman for The Commodores, songwriter for other artists, and as a solo act, Richie became the only songwriter to score nine chart-toppers in nine consecutive years. Aside from Kenny Rogers' "Lady" and USA For Africa's "We Are The World," (co-written with Michael Jackson), all the other #1's are here: "Endless Love" (with Diana Ross), "Truly," "Hello," "All Night Long (All Night)," "Say You, Say Me," "Still" and "Three Times A Lady." That's not even counting the man's other Top 10 hits including further Commodores manna like "Easy" (later a hit remake for Faith No More). Throw in solo sides like the infectious "Dancing On the Ceiling" and the urgent "Running With The Night" and its easy to hear how Richie nonchalantly dominating the charts throughout the '80s. He brings things up-to-date with two new songs: the slow rolling Enrique Iglesias duet "To Love a Woman" and the piano ballad "Goodbye."
Two CD set packed with hit after hit from Richie's solo career as well as his time with the Commodores. Whether you're in need of a ballad, an uptempo Pop track, a sultry R&B vibe or a Funk groove, this double disc package has exactly what you're looking for. This hit singer, songwriter and performer was never easy to categorize, but he was always easy to love! 38 tracks including 'All Night Long', 'Three Times A Lady', 'Easy', 'Don't Stop The Music', 'My Love', 'Brick House' and many more. Universal.

| | Gang Of Four Solid Gold/Another Day Another Dollar EP CD (1981)
Definitive Collection music CDs
$9.25 SOLID GOLD/ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER DOLLAR EP brings together the second and third studio releases from the seminal New Wave band, Gang of Four, in one CD.
This rerelease features live versions of "Cheeseburger" and "What We All Want."
Gang of Four's existence had as much to do with Slave and Chic as it did the Sex Pistols and the Stooges, which is something Solid Gold demonstrates more than Entertainment! Any smartypants can point out the irony of a band on Warner Bros. railing against systematic tools of control disguised as entertainment media, but Gang of Four were more observational than condescending. True, Jon King and Andy Gill might have been hooting and hollering in a semiviolent and discordant fashion, but they were saying "think about it" more than "you lot are a bunch of mindless puppets." Abrasiveness was a means to grab the listener, and it worked. Reciting Solid Gold's lyrics on a local neighborhood corner might get a couple interested souls to pay attention. It isn't poetry, and it's no fun; most within earshot would just continue power-walking ...
| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Definitive Collection songs
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night.
Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be ...
| | Z-Ro Cocaine CD (2009)
Definitive Collection album
$15.05 Despite his status as one of hip-hop's most prolific artists, Z-Ro never quite spreads himself too thin. The provocatively titled COCAINE is his second release from 2009, and features his trademark self-aware, yet rapier-sharp lyrics over some of the hotter beats out of the fertile Houston scene. The Intro skilfully sets out the landscape as the dark-vocaled MC reflects upon his choice of a life of street dealing without a shred of remorse, while stressing his decision was not exactly the wise one. From there, Z-Ro, an expert storyteller, wanders from tale to tale, each one delivered with a novelist's touch, on a record which somehow transcends cookie-cutter.
In 2009, Z-Ro's loyal fan base expected Heroin, a two-CD set announced the previous year, but instead they got Cocaine, a one-CD version with many songs that already appeared on the mixtape ...

| | Sandra Bernhard Whatever It Takes CD (2009)
Definitive Collection album
$11.05 Sandra Bernhard is best known as an actress and comedian, and she's released five albums featuring both music and her trademark acerbic humor, but if Whatever It Takes is supposed to be funny, the wit is so bone dry that it entirely refuses to announce itself as such. Instead, Whatever It Takes appears to be a sincere and straight-faced exercise in internationalist pop with a social conscience. Produced by Ted Mason, a former member of Modern English, Whatever It Takes merges big rock & roll guitars and dance-friendly beats with rhythmic and melodic accents from Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America; Rwandan vocalist Jean Paul Samputu guests on three tracks, while Haitian singer Erol Josué also contributes his talents, giving this material some legitimate world music cred. Bernhard wrote all ten songs in collaboration with Mason, and while she doesn't exactly hop on a soapbox, much of the time she clearly has some sort of message to share with us, declaring "All around, we just want to be free again," "It's a new world, leave your fears behind" and "I'm going to change the holy word, I'm going to bring you 'round from what you've heard." (Bernhard has told more than one journalist that the optimism of Barack Obama's presidential campaign was in her thoughts while making the album.) Musically, Whatever It Takes is strong and well-crafted stuff, and the mixture of dancefloor-approved grooves, Mason's guitar heroics and the global sound and feel brought by the guest artists makes this a surprisingly successful ...
