| | Lula Reed I'll Drown In My Tears CD - Import Lula Reed Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Although Lula Reed did record after 1955 for Chess and Tangerine (and for the King subsidiary Federal), this 24-track anthology wholly sticks to her 1952-1955 King recordings. In addition to numerous singles, it has four 1952-1953 sides she did as vocalist with Sonny Thompson & His Orchestra -- one of those being her most famous recording, "I'll Drown in My Tears" -- as well as a previously unissued outtake and a previously unavailable alternate of "Bump on a Log." Like much of the R&B from the era, it's transitional music, owing something to jazz in the arrangements but more to blues in the songwriting, with some hints of the coming rock & roll era in some doo wop-flavored vocals. It's not part of the upper crust of early-'50s R&B -- it's a little journeywoman, in part because so many of the songs are similar midtempo urbane jazzy blues ballads, in part because Reed's high and slightly pinched voice really isn't that excellent. By far the most notable of these tracks is "I'll Drown in My Tears," later covered by Ray Charles for a hit as "Drown in My Own Tears"; Reed's version isn't as agonizingly slow, but nor is it nearly as memorable, though it did make number five in the R&B charts. The pace varies a little into uptempo jump at times, with a little gospel on "A Quiet Time With Jesus," a bit of a down-home blues flavor in the acoustic guitar on "Troubles on Your Mind," and a little early rock & roll in 1955's "I'm Giving All My Love" and "Rock Love" (the latter of which was covered for a number 13 pop hit by the Fontane Sisters). ~ Richie Unterberger
Discovered by noted bandleader (and later her husband, featured on this CD with his orchestra on four songs) Sonny Thompson, Lula Reed recorded extensively for King and Federal Records for over 10 years - interrupted by a brief sojourn with Checker in th

I'll Drown In My Tears album
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background ...

$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was written by Jackson, covered by the Pretty Things, and then ...

I'll Drown In My Tears CD music
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by ...
