In what he claims to be his final release as a musical performer, Jay-Z drops THE BLACK ALBUM, a sprawling, ambitious effort that rivals the best work of the rapper's already legendary career. Working with a who's who of hip-hop's most high-profile producers, the outrageously talented MC adjusts his flow and subject matter to the wildly varied tracks, proving once again just how gifted he is as a wordsmith.
From the epic "What More Can I Say" (a collaboration with the Buchannans) to the brutally honest, Eminem-produced "Moment of Clarity," THE BLACK ALBUM bleeds with inspiration. Other highlights include the fuel-injected "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" (featuring Timbaland behind the board), the club-ready "Change Clothes" (which sports the Neptunes' trademark beats), and the old-school stomp of "99 Problems" (with pioneering hip-hop producer Rick Rubin). It makes one wonder how an artist at the peak of his craft could willingly put the microphone down. Hopefully, time out of the spotlight will remind Shawn Carter why he became successful in the first place, and find him back in the studio.

From the intro,you can feel this epic.
The Dark Introspection of moment of clarity,the humor of Threat,The complete utter talent shown on tracks like Lucifer,Allure,My First Song.Encore is almost icing on the cake.If You dont like this record at first listen,i suggest a rewind is in order.Definitely a good buy for the quintessential hip hop enthusiast

well, i gots to say that the jigga-man ain't the same he used to be, first he came out he was king of ny like B.I.G.-rest in peace-but now... his lyrics ain't that deep like until 4-5 years ago and beatwise i gots to say that this is not my taste. PEACE anyway.

It's hard not to somewhat admire the guts of a rapper who would lead off his album by not merely sampling a hearty slice of the hallowed Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" while Faith sings in the background, but by claiming Biggie's tacit approval on "A Dream." Hidden Beach Recordings' Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 is a sampler of unsigned artists assembled by Steve McKeever's custom label, which was put on the map by the success of hip-hop/rap/neo-soul artist Jill Scott. The selections are typical of the mix of African-American styles the label has promoted during its short life. Hidden Beach's company goal is to find ways to make rap and hip-hop acceptable to an older demographic (and thus more broadly popular) by infusing (or diluting) it with elements of soul and smooth jazz. It's a reasonable enough charter, but the compilation and release of Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 (no, none of them are actually hits) suggests that the company is hoping someone else -- radio, reviewers? -- will do its A&R work for it and help decide which of these unknown artists should be signed.
