Following the success of their self-titled debut, the Ozark Mountain Daredevils' sophomore release, It'll Shine When It Shines, continues on their already established path of California-style country-rock. This release contained what would ultimately prove to be their greatest hit, "Jackie Blue," which ended up peaking at number three on the pop chart. Although "Jackie Blue" is by far the least countrified track on the album, it embodies the casual, understated groove of the band that could be found on any of the Daredevils' releases. Although when examined closely the album is really three neatly separate albums by three maturing songwriters (John Dillon, Steve Cash, and the underrated Larry Lee), the thread of their relaxed atmosphere and light harmonies runs throughout the album, binding it together as a cohesive whole. ~ Zac Johnson

In my opinion, this is one of my all time favorite albums from the seventies.
The Daredevils never sounded better, and the quality of the cd is actually better than the original album I purchased thirty some years ago. I would strongly recommend this cd to anyone who loves good music.

I bought this just for the song Jackie Blue. I was suprised to hear so much good mucic! Excellent harmonizing, excellent songwriting. What an underrated group. Reissue sound absolutely perfect. Get this.

The first album by OMD was good. The second one "It'll Shine When It Shines" was and still is excellent. Then everything went haywire with every new album showing a decline in artistic and musical daring. But the mixture of country, bluegrass and roots music on this album holds up very well over the years.

The Ozark Mountain Daredevils' third album for A&M continues their good-natured Southern chooglin' with hints of a newfound mid-70s AM pop vibe. Although it was recorded in Nashville, The Car Over the Lake Album has a distinctly Californian vibe on several tracks, particularly those written and sung by drummer Larry Lee, whose contributions could ride along "Ventura Highway" with any of America's recordings. Throughout her career, including dozens of inspirational records since the 1960s, Shirley Caesar has earned her reputation as one of the most soulful and passionate of gospel singers.
