$10.49 On 2005's CHRISTMAS SONGS, Diana Krall applies her sultry vocals and nuanced piano lines to a strong set of holiday classics. | | Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CD (1959) Bonus Track; Remastered
Age Of Peace CD music
$6.29 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated ...

| | Incredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery CD (1960) SACD Hybrid
Age Of Peace CD music
$15.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
John "Wes" Montgomery taught himself to play at the age of nineteen and created a style as influential to jazz guitar as was Charlie Christian's to an earlier generation. Recorded in the early part of his solo career, THE INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR OF WES MONTGOMERY defined standards for hard bop guitar which are as cogent today as they were in 1960.
The album jumps out with the quartet hustling through Sonny Rollins' "Airegin," where Wes performs his often imitated licks with grace and agility. His extended phrases, thematic development, harmonic and melodic embellishment come together in a formidable technique with a heavy swing. An impressive use of octaves and chords coupled with the rejection of a guitar pick in favor of his own thumb allowed Wes' guitar to sing with warmth and with beauty. The lyrical rendition of "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" and his own "D-Natural Blues" are prime examples of the fullness of his lines. To this day, whenever a guitarist uses octaves he runs the risk of comparison to Wes, such was his mastery of this technique. Another ...

| | Bell Jar Nightlight CD (2007)
Age Of Peace CD music
$16.45 Comprising musicians who've been in and around bands for years locally in their home county of Gloucestershire, nationally and internationally, Bell Jar first got together in the autumn of 1998. Since then, having only gigged occasionally, they have reclusively recorded, produced and released three albums. The first, 'Secret Volcanoes', was a homegrown record representing two weekend's worth of playing live to tape and about a day of mixing at the FFG studios in Bredon, near their Cheltenham hometown. Released in 1999, the results were enigmatic and engaging. The second album was released on the MADAN label. Entitled 'On the Outside Looking In', it was recorded at FFG, in their homes, and then mixed at The Magic Garden Studios in Wolverhampton. This 2001 release saw a maturing of the distinctive and often dark groove that had become the Bell Jar sound. And in the summer of 2003 the band released its third album, 'Nightlight'. Recorded at FFG studios in Gloucestershire, the album represents Bell Jar at their strongest. Understated yet powerful, immediate but not crass, Nightlight demonstrates a quiet confidence and a sublime simplicity that is irresistible. The band has loads of 'been there, done that' stories they could ...

| | Pete Malinverni Invisible Cities CD (2008)
Age Of Peace album
$13.79 Many of the pieces on pianist Pete Malinverni's Invisible Cities were inspired in part by the book of the same name by Italo Calvino, though in Malinverni's case, the cities he portrays in his composition are not figments of his imagination. Recruiting a top-flight band for the date, including tenor saxophonist Rich Perry, trumpeter/flügelhornist Tim Hagans, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Tom Melito, Malinverni delivers a CD with a striking mix of originals and familiar songs (the latter reshaped dramatically). The dark mood of the pianist's "New Orleans -- Cities & Desire" reflects the somber mood after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, with Hagans' mournful muted trumpet backed by the somber rhythm section. Malinverni blends several stylistic influences in his lively "Cities & Time," which is powered by an infectious ostinato bassline. The bittersweet "Salem -- Hester Prynne" is named for the ...
