Open Tha Door album
$9.49 Lyrical acrobat Slim Shady returns after a five-year absence with his fifth major label release, continuing to strike the perfect balance between brooding insight and absolute silliness on 2009's RELAPSE. Opening single "Crack a Bottle" reunites Detroit's maddest rapper with his superstar mentor (Dr. Dre) and protege (50 Cent) on a fittingly funky tour de force.
Eminem's RELAPSE, a double album released after five years of recorded silence, a record featuring Dr. Dre behind the boards for the first time since 2000, faced no shortage of the relentless pressure of expectations. A narrative of survival after facing down his demons in rehab unfurled with Eminem's usual twisted Swift-ian wit, RELAPSE should disappoint few fans (or critics for that matter) with its patented mix of hilariously spit ...
| | Drake So Far Gone CD (2009)
Open Tha Door CD music
$8.69 No doubt about it, Drake blew up big time in 2009. The one-time TV actor (from DEGRASSI HIGH: THE NEXT GENERATION) hooked up with Lil Wayne a couple years previously, worked the mixtape and collabo circuit for a spell and then suddenly hit with the song "Best I Ever Had." The song was taken from the SO FAR GONE mixtape and became the top summer jam of 2009. After a ferocious bidding war, Drake ended up signing with Universal Motown (while keeping his affiliation with Weezy's Young Money and Cash Money intact) and was officially introduced via the SO FAR GONE EP. The release included seven tracks from the mixtape and gave undeniable proof that the hype and noise surrounding the rapper were all ...
| | Prince Purple Rain CD (1984) SDTK
Open Tha Door music CDs
$9.49 A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. While Prince cavorted in purple kitchen foil and rode his Harley in high heels, the real star of the film, the music, was doing all the talking. A knit of funk and rock, a heavily stylized Hendrix guitar lick here and there, and a wilfully danceable backbeat all made for a huge ...

| | Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... CD (1995)
Open Tha Door album
$8.49 The Wu-Tang saga continues. Raekwon "The Chef" is already an irreplacable part of rap music's largest breed, the Wu-Tang Clan, but his debut proves him also capable of standing on his own two feet. On ONLY BUILT 4 CUBAN LINX..., Raekwon's street-tough lyrics spotlight the roughness of his everyday life and, combined with short story interludes, shape the plot for this gangster movie of an album.
The topics on CUBAN LINX are all Chef-centered braggadocio, and the beats constantly reflect the hip-hop underground. Raekwon defines the politics of the rap game on "Incarcerated Scarfaces," and invites any non-believers to test his skills. Joining Raekwon on just about every cut, fellow Clan-man Ghost Face Killer gives a great solo effort on "Wisdom Body."
In fact, CUBAN LINX bares closer resemblance to an actual Wu-Tang Clan album than any solo record by a Wu-Tang member. The backing track for "Guillotine (Swordz)" was previously introduced on Method Man's solo album TICAL, and Raekwon and his crew expand on it for a quick flashback. "Can It Be All So Simple" also returns--this time in a remixed form. These two songs, along with "Ice Cream" and "Wu-Gambinos" (both of which feature Method Man), should feed the habits of hungry Wu-fiends. Raekwon's chamber briefly escapes the Clan's musical borders on "Verbal Intercourse," and though the track evokes other Wu-Tang ...

| | Alan Jackson Honky Tonk Christmas CD (1993)
Open Tha Door music CDs
$6.29 One of the best country Christmas albums, this smart blend of old and new songs doesn't have a traditional carol in the bunch. He starts off strong with the rocking "Honky Tonk Christmas" and then sings a gorgeous duet with Alison Krauss. He adds his voice to a previously taped track by the late Keith Whitley on "There's a New Kid in Town" and does a credible job with Merle Haggard's "If We Make It Through December." Save for a silly duet with the cartoon Chipmunks, this is a fabulous album. ~ Brian ...
