| | Enya Shepherd Moons CD (1991)
Attitude CD music
$15.15 Her otherworldly voice is trance-like in such songs as the tranquil "Shepherd Moons," "Angeles," "Evacuee," and "Marble Halls." Accessibly lilting, awash in synth strings, "Caribbean Blue" is this album's answer to "Orinoco Flow," Enya's gigantic worldwide pop hit. The song, as all the others, transports the listener to another place. "How Can I Keep ...
| | Windham Hill Christmas II CD (2003)
Attitude music CDs
$6.09 Following in the footsteps of the previous collection, A Windham Hill Christmas, Vol. 2 gathers more relaxing, sophisticated holiday music as performed by Windham Hill's roster of artists. The collection finds the right balance between traditional and contemporary, both in terms of its sound and its choice of songs. Will Ackerman and David Cullen's "I Wonder as I Wander" sounds gently modern, while Paul McCandless' "In Dulci Jubilo" has a slightly more traditional bent. Tracy Silverman and Thea Suits' strings and flute interpretation of "Away in a Manger" mixes both approaches and is breathtaking in its lovely simplicity. Most of the performances here, including Barbara Higbie's "Patapan," suggest pristine snowscapes or, in the case of Jim Brickman's "The First Noel," the warmth of a hearth, but Steve Erquiaga's "Joy to the World" may be the first ...
| | Govi Saffron & Silk CD (2004)
Attitude songs
$13.45 Appropriately named, composer/guitarist Govi's SAFFRON & SILK has the sensual, exotic feel of a midnight cruise down the Nile, a walk through an open-air market in Morocco, or a warm, lazy day on a Mediterranean beach. Packed with soft, swaying rhythms, and melodies that ...
| | David Sylvian Approaching Silence CD (1999)
Attitude album
$6.95 Originally conceived as music for multi-media installations, as an audio-only experience Sylvian's album provides us with a soporific dose of ambient sounds. The title track is made up of cyclical motifs of bells and sustained chords reverberating like ripples on a pond, punctuated by a rich gong-like guitar chord. This is suffused with hushed animal calls, fragments of fuzzy talk-radio programmes and the garbled falsetto of contributor Robert Fripp.
"Epiphany" takes sampled material of passing trains and hushed church bells and a plaintive human wailing phrase to make an all-too-brief interlude. Continuing in much the same atmospheric vein "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" is a summer doze in a wooded glade. Imagine chandeliers tinkling in the warm breeze and half-hear the faint sound of a distant civilisation. The hypnotic doze is peppered by shards of muted feedback buzzing in and out like an inquisitive bee, associating the music with its title. Bearing in mind this music was intended to accompany art installations it does ...

| | Willie & Lobo Manana CD (2003)
Attitude album
$13.45 The shadowy, sunrise-laden cover of the flamenco guitar/gypsy violin duo's ninth disc reflects the playful spirit of the personalities behind one of world music's most original phenomenons of the last decade. There's always a lightheartedness in their songs, reflective of the Mexican surf region where their partnership began. Yet when it comes to blending traditional elements with modern percussive sensibilities, and showing the rhythmic possibilities of the violin, the tandem is not only serious, but innovative. Manana is one of their most diverse discs, inspired by the experiences they've had playing their gypsy joy for audiences all around the world. Thus, there's the lazy days on Mexican and Hawaiian beaches, seductive dances in the hills of Scaromonte, even an exquisitely exotic Arabian caravan (the mystical, almost experimental closing track "Caravan of Camels"). John Leftwich's production adds some well-placed electronic percussion amidst the more natural soundscaping on tracks like the swaying title tune, and there are some cool electric guitar enhancements. "El Desperado," a song written in the 17th Century Mexican village of San ...
